OK, this is probobly a really dumb question, but I havn't been into porsche's for very long. I decided to ask anyway. I know what cabriolet means but what about carrera? and also what are the differences between 911, 993, and 996. maybe some various other names, cant think of any others off the top of my head...

carrera is just a name that porsche uses on some 911's. it came out after the sc's they are all still 911's. people are usually referring to mid to late 1980's 911's when saying carrera.
964's are 911's made from 1989 to 1994. then they changed the body in 1995 and called the 911 993's and the newest 911 (i for one believe it is not really a 911) is the 996. 964's are also referred to as C2's(2 wheel drive) or C4's (all wheel). C2 stands for Carrera 2. |

Gimme a Early S anyday
Let's see now there was a 356 Carrera both Coupe and Speedster in the mid 1950's. Then there were the 1973.5 RS Carrera's both street and track versions. Then after that I don't really care 1974 and 1975 Carrera's, Turbo Carrera's and various other Pimped out versions that called themselves Porsches.

The first Porsche car was a 356. Why? Basically it was a marketing scheme: Porsche felt people wouldn't buy a first car from an upstart company, so he picked 356, so people would assume there's been other cars in the company before.
So how did he go from 356 to 911? Well, I can tell ya where he got the middle '1': Originally, the 911 was to be called the 901. Unfortunately, after he new car was shown at the Frankfurt autoshow (in 1965?) Peugot informed Porsche that they have a copyright on all three digit car names that have a '0' in the middle. Rather than get involved in a pesky lawsuit, Porsche decided to rename the 901 to 911. The name Targa is derrived from "Targa Florio," a famous race in Italy, I believe. Carrera, as mentioned before means race, and is derrived from the "Carrera Panamerica" a famous race in Mexico, if I'm not mistaken. S (as in 911S and 944S2) stands for "Super," while SC stands for Super Carrera. The other numbers (besides the middle '1' in 911) I have no clue of who the Porsche people get them, besides being project numbers that became the car numbers. -Zoltan.

Oh yeah, one more name:
Boxster is a combination of Boxer (engine) and Roadster (Convertible). -Z.
