When it comes to ammo, too much is not enough.

Long term storage........
I have had some .22 rimfire ammo go bad after many years of storage. It seems that the primer compound in the rim will dry up and fall out into the powder charge. I have pulled the bullets on quite a few misfires to find the primer which is a green color mixed in with the powder which is a grey/black color, very easy to spot. Since then, I have tried to shoot up the old rimfire ammo and restock with fresh rounds as much as possible. On the other hand, I have fired center fire ammo that was a 100 years old or older with no problems! The oldest was probably some Frankfort arsenal 45-70 made in the 1880s. Every round went off the first time! Yeah, I know it was collector grade ammo, but it worked extremely well in a Springfield Trapdoor rifle that I had.

10,000 rounds of each caliber you need would be sufficient!

What I'm talking about...
|
multiply the number of rounds it takes to stop a zombie in your area times the number of zombies expected per unit time
you may need to figure in out of area zombies if the surrounding citadels are weaker than yours derate for the length of the logistics train as the zombies will try to break it |
Here is my theory.
1. How much ammo you have only matters if you are or will be expending it. (If you're not going to be shooting, why does it matter if you have 1 box or 50?) 2. Post-SHTF, if you are expending ammo, for the most part, you will be expending it shooting at armed people. (I have a hard time imagining why you'd need to shoot more than, let's say, a hundred un-armed people. Around #99, wouldn't they get the idea? As for hunting for food, hunters don't go through much ammo. If you can even hunt at all - I don't see myself hunting much with my Glock 19, besides a grocery store manager.) 3. Armed people, when shot at, will usually shoot back. (I hold this truth to be self-evident.) 4. How many times you can be shot at, before you are fatally hit depends on your skill at acquiring cover, the other guy's skill, and probability. (What else would it depend on?) 5. Let's call that last number "X". In other words, you can be shot at X times before the probability that you are dead becomes quite high. 6. My theory is, you essentially need X rounds of ammo. Plus, lets say, a couple boxes for shooting un-armed people, and a couple of boxes for hunting. So call it X + 200. Why? 6a. Because you're not likely to fire at the other armed people substantially more times than they fire at you. Hopefully you have the better marksmanship and fire discipline. 6b. So you will shoot some number of times that is less than X, by the time you die. 6c. After you die, you have no further need of ammo. Post-SHTF, there isn't a lot of inheritance going on. 7. You can't control the skill of the other armed people. It is what it is. If you're unfortunate enough to live in a neighborhood of trained snipers, then X is going to be a very small number. Sorry. 8. You can control your skill at acquiring cover. If you do your shooting standing naked in an open field, then X is also going to be a rather low number. But if you do your shooting from a fortified position, wearing body armour, from concealment, etc, then X can be a large number. 9. So the conclusion is: the better your defenses are, the higher X is, and the more ammo you need to stockpile (X + 200). If you live in a typical urban house or apartment (which is pretty much transparent to bullets), and you'll be out and about a lot, looking for food and water - your X is low. If you live in a fortified, well-defended house, or better yet a "compound", and can stay there with your large stash of food and water, then your X is high. 10. For me, my X is probably about 500 rounds, and that's optimistic. I really think that, by the time I've exchanged fire with other armed people 300 times, I'm very unlikely to need more ammo :-( |
Ammo can be traded (bartered), too...
|
There's other stuff that can be bartered, and can be acquire pre-SHTF more cheaply than ammo. Food. Gasoline. Insulin. Heart medicine. Infant formula. Batteries.
Anyway, why will you need to barter with anyone who is not armed? In the typical neighborhood, only about __% of people will be armed. That number varies - lower in Manhattan, higher in Bozeman. When that number gets low enough, there's no need to barter, because the few people who are armed can't possibly gather, move, store or consume all the stuff belonging to the many who are not armed. |
The price will go up, it will last longer that a Big Mac. (maybe)
Plenty is a good starting point. Round count/caliber consideration is important, (w/o the ammo, you have an expensive club), And,..... I am almost to plenty/caliber. But I've only been collecting a few years............ And as the man says, important to rotate the stock. Karl 88 Targa |
How much space do you have? Fill it up.
|
Guys,
STOP posting how much ammo you have on an open internet forum! Its not a good thing... My feeling is that you cannot have too much of most anything... unless you are having to move it. Get what you feel you need then buy twice as much. Should carry you in most situations. |

bought a box of 1000 fiocchi .45 acp.
250 of those went into the stash 750 i shot, and kept the cases for reloading plinking ammo will buy another box of 1000 and do the same, adding another 250 in the stash. after that, i'll buy another box of 1000 if it turns out i need more brass for reloading because the current batch got lost in the dirt, or is wearing out.. at that point i'll add some more to the stash. i'm currently awaiting a M1a permit , i'll do the exact same there... buy boxes of a 1000 rnds, stash 25%, reload for plinking. Compared to most guys at the range, i go through ammo like a 5 year old goes through candy. At least for european/belgian standards, i'm sure you bunch would think i'm basically being low usage.. |
just remember people. having a stash of food and ammo are likely signs of a suspected terrorist that can be held indefinitely w/o trial at gitmo

Friend of mine in BR (Baton Rouge) just had most of his Grandfathers gun collection recovered by the police. It was stolen a year ago and found within miles of the house in a druggie's trailer... Please guys, there is no need to advertise what you do or do not have at home. Its just like putting an advert out there for a thief... |
