Unfortunately, we face everything from a "boiling frog" scenario to a Hurricane Katrina scenario.

In the "boiling frog" scenario, the break down of law and order is very gradual. I look at the fall of the Roman empire as an example. It took hundreds of years, during which the breakdown took several lifetimes. I guess the tipping point is when the law no longer protects individual liberty and one must fend for themselves in all aspects of life.

In the Hurricane Katrina scenario, the break down is sudden and temporary. You probably don't need to rethink your lifestyle, just be prepared and realize that when law and order are restored, you will have to answer for your actions.

Somewhere in between would be a revolution, and people often refuse to recognize it until their president (or Prime Minister, or Supreme Leader) steps down and it causes an instant fracture of political groups with no clear replacement leadership. A likely cause would be a failing of our financial system. For example, a default by Greece could be the first domino. It could also be the only domino, or one of a handful of dominoes. I think we will see some dramatic global action before this kind of scenario plays out.

Even the Great Depression could be considered such a scenario. Whole regions of the country dried up and were essentially lawless for extended periods.

Economic meltdown is bad, but the worst breakdowns are always caused by famine. Sometimes mother nature has it out for us. I'd look for widespread crop failure as a particularly dangerous scenario.

For direction to run, don't fall for fleeing in the same direction as the masses, as the Politicians will send them the second best route to reduce traffic and competition for supplies. Watch for the guys going a different direction...early. Everyone will seek alternate routes after the traffic starts jamming up.
