Natchitoches La

I'm planning on going to Natchitoches on the 16th for a couple of days. At least if I get the seals replaced on one of my struts on the plane. And weather permitting.

Anyway, Ive never been and I'm taking the wife, so any suggestions on what to do while there?

Thanks.

Natchitouches is the oldest settlement in Louisiana, early 1700s as i recall. people are very friendly in a small town sort of way. The downtown and water fromt area is nice, historic buildings and quaint shops. Lasyone's Meatpie Restaurant is worth a visit as is The Landing. Took my wife on a horse and carriage ride there a few years ago, nice. Fort jean baptiste is there, a state park. Several plantations around the area. Northwestern State Univeristy is there and is the main employer in town. Overall a nice place to spend a few quiet days.

Ive probably spent in the six figure range on getting my PPL, and buying a plane, plus a few updates. And the wife has been good with this all along. So if she wants to go see what the place looks like, I'm glad to fly her down there.

Oh, check this out:

The lights on the Cane River are romantic if she is into that kind of thing. You'll be there for the festival.

You can do all of Natty in a day. Front street, maybe get a B&B. PLUS: you're just 70 miles south of SHV. Downtown airport is just minutes away from all of the casinos/shopping areas.. MUCH more to do here if you get bored.

Biggest and best Christmas display in the state. Find a room before you come down. Not too many hotels and most B&B's are filled. Roux is correct, one day, maybe 1/2 a day and you have seen it. The Christmas display is really nice.

I'll give a few a call. We could always go somewhere else on Friday and spend all of Saturday there. I'm planning on returning on Sunday, need to be back before Tuesday.

I went to college at Northwestern. Definitely visit Lasyones for meat pies and dirty rice. Lots of plantations around there, Steel Magnolias was filmed there. Also, since you are flying into the airport, note the trees at the end of the runway. That's where Jim Croce lost his life.

dm - it is a small town as per above (but as they'll love to tell ya) older than NoLa

one interesting thing for you might be to get some history on it and connect that with the French history of your home town - good for the kids too

also, check out the Red River area

and have some meat pies

I have to ask, whats a meat pie?

I have a mechanic coming by Wednesday afternoon to look at my strut. Its left a drop or two for months, but now the seals must be shot. I just had a new engine monitor installed and while it was there I noticed it was leaking quite a bit of fluid. They put some nitrogen in it, but its flat now.

Hopefully everything will come together and I'll be on my way Friday. I just need the strut fixed and VFR weather. If not we will probably go down after Thanksgiving.

yup and they are THE spot for them in La.

somewhat like France, La. has local places that are famed one type of food or another - rice, crawfish, etc.

Plus you are not too far from Zwolle, home of the best tamales EVER....Plus it's easy to meet everyone in town as they are either named Ebarb or Sepulvado.
