I need a good umbrella
Hey, you guys have helped me with stranger stuff in the past so...
I recently moved to Kuala Lumpur. As a result of the climate here, you can and will experience torrential rains and you won't necessarily see them coming when you leave home in the morning. I commute to work on the train and have a 2 minute walk to the station and then a 5 minute walk to the office where I am out in the open. I carry a laptop style bag and always have an umbrella... But the one i have is just not cutting it. It is not quite large enough to really cover me so my bag invariably gets wet, as do part of my pants. No good. So, I am in search of a good umbrella. I don't want to graduate to the full size deal as that's a pain on the train etc. In order of priority, I want: Small enough to fit in a typical laptop bag Adequate coverage when open Durable These requirements don't seem so crazy but I haven't found anything that fits the bill; most of the umbrellas sold here are essentially disposable and most of the folks in my office just hang out for an hour or two waiting for the rain to stop rather than braving the rain with one of these small inadequate models. So... Does anyone have an umbrella to recommend? |
my wife has a fantastic umbrella. i'll take a peek tonight. it is small packed down, but you open it up into a strong huge shield.
dont forget man-rule (i forget the number)..under no circumstance may two men share an umbrella. hahaha. personally, i would get a kickass raincoat, and a waterproof bag. kudos to living in KL. i love that place. |
I bought an umbrella from a Brookstone store when the Horton Plaza center opened in San Diego many many years ago and it is one of the large golf, wind proof models and has lasted for well over 20 years! They have them on line also and seem to be really great. They now have better folding models it appears......

I have a very nice one from London Fog that is full sized and held up for over 10 years. (correction, I bought it in Europe, so make that 25 years...how time flies). It has the classic hook style handle. Fulton makes a similar classic style. The "stick" type that do not collapse or fold tend to hold up best to wind...or beating someone over the head. Make sure you get a full sized "manly" one. If you need a really large one...look for a "golf" umbrella in black.

Yeah, there are lots of fold up golf umbrellas.

Knirps are good German made umbrellas.

how to tell a tourist in seattle?
:the guy with the broken umbrella. get a light gore-tex coat and a waterproof courier bag. |
Shedrain. Lifetime warranty.

Thanks for the recommendations guys! Those Knirps look pretty tempting... I think I will pull the trigger and let you know how it works out.
Teenerted, KL is just north of the equator. I have a lightweight GoreTex shell and a waterproof bag, but after a five minute walk outside in the shell I don't want to take it off because I've sweated straight through my shirt :) |
