backslash vs forward slash

OMG people..

THIS is a Backslash \
THIS is a Forward Slash / ( or just Slash or Whack )

Rant over...

masraum 01-31-2012 07:55 PM

Bang !
Hash, pound #

Back slash \ is from MS-DOS
Forward slash / is from Unix

Joe Bob 01-31-2012 08:02 PM

Ctrl Enter.....love that one.

rattlsnak 01-31-2012 08:12 PM

Yep, I'm talking about people who use the term 'backslash' when reading out URL's.
Like http colon backslash backslash or pelican parts dot com backslash off topic.
Aarrgghhhh.

Weird, I've never heard anyone make that mistake. Most people just leave the protocol identifier off, I guess. I think I say "whack", h t t p colon whack whack...

MysticLlama 01-31-2012 08:31 PM

We always said whack was the \ and scratch was the /

And yes \ is back, and / is forward, I dunno why people really want to say the / is back? Weird, but very common.

And here I thought I was a nerd.....

There are slashes and backslashes.

There is no such thing as a forward slash.

Saying it that way is just redundant, IMO... like saying something occurred at "2 A.M. in the morning."

I always thought it was a 'hatch' as in cross hatch.

What do you call it when you're talking to La-a. (Ladasha)?

Why are you so pissy?

I remember the stone ages of setting up modems. My US Robotics Dual Standard had some set up strings that were real tongue twisters. I was helping a buddy set his modem up over the phone and reading the setup string I was using and a friend was at my house listing. She thought we were talking secret code.

I'm not saying this is the definitive, but...

The next time you’re bored with a simple exclamation point, why not call it a bang (for computers) or a screamer (for typesetters)? Or how about the star or splat (asterisk), the oh-so-commonplace whack (forward slash), or some useful fingernails (parentheses, like these)?

Yeah, that was exactly the usage. \\servername\share\etc.

And yeah, when I said / is forward, I just meant it as *not* back, not that you actually say "forward slash", it's just a slash dammit.

Head416 02-01-2012 10:58 AM

When I'm on the phone with somebody and tell them to "click" on something and they ask "left-click?" I want to slap them!
