Anybody have a 21st century Ducati SS?

I know there's a good number of fellas on here with carbureted Ducati SS900s from the '90s. Thanks to everyone, especially Higgins, for helping me out about those.

Anyone have experience with mid-2000s FI supersports? All the reviews say - more reliable (uh . . . yeah. . whatever) and good power, about the amount I feel I can handle. I would be replacing my incredibly loud former track-bike 1987 CBR600 that has similar HP numbers and about half the torque.

Last fall I did look at a 93 SS900 superlight that was cool, but the price premium was too much, and the potential maintenance problems, and I want to get something I won't feel guilty riding.

Pic of that one in the March Playboy

FI is better than carbs in practically every way you could imagine.

Don't have an SS, but I do have a 2009 Monster with FI. I am normally not a huge fan of FI due to some problems motorcycle manufacturers have with throttle lag, but that is non-existent on the Monster. Also, my garage is not heated and the Monster always starts regardless of the temperature.

No help on the SS per say, but I did have an FI 900 Monster. Great engine. Made tons of power, zero issues. And the sound rumbling through a pair of Termi pipes.....heaven.

throttle lag is most definitely not a problem. I actually installed a new throttle cam on mine.

I won't be suprised if you find no one raises their hand...those things are pretty fugly IMO.

Go for the 90's SS. Classic good looks, not hard to find and they are pretty cheap these days. The original mikuni carbs on my '95 monster (same engine as SS) have been virtually maintenance free in the 15+ years I've had my bike.

i have the '99, fuel injected. its been solidly reliable, after addressing some fuel filter maintenance that had been ignored by the PO.

i love this bike.

I can't get over the awful looks. If I'm gonna get a SuperSport, I'd rather take the older tech (and absolutely freakin' gorgeous) '90s version.

Oh come on... the 90's SS looks like the designers took styling cues from a Chevy truck. It's flat-sided, boxy, and boring. If it were a person I'd say it had a face for radio, since one of it's only redeeming qualities is it's sound.

Pretty much any newer ducati looks better, including the newer SS (though I do prefer them with the larger fairing).

the 99 and later SS is overstyled, IMO. that said, its a great machine and i have had zero problems, outside the above mentioned issue.

i like the simplicity of the half fairing, although i do like the looks of the full fairing better.

the 99 CR (half fairing) bike has the advantage of having the same suspension and aluminum swing-arm as the SP (full fairing).

98 is your cut-off. 99 and above are just way too fugly.

This is the one FWIW. I certainly don't need it. Keep talking me out of it.

Well, if it floats your boat, go for it. Test ride it first. The first time I rode on a '98 900SS, having ridden to the dealership on a Japanese 600cc sportbike, I was underwhelmed by the power of the Duc. The trellis chassis, though, was better. Quicker, yet simultaneously more stable.

I have no FHE with the FI on the newer SuperSports, but even the FI on my '93 Duc has been reliable and smooth. Works just as advertised.
