I worked in a bike shop as well back in the late 80s and have heard many of those old trick and try a bunch of them. Why not just buy Campy hubs to begin with (Shinamo and Suntour were all that bad I found. I like Suntour stuff, they work well), or philwood. I use to just spray Triflow on my chain and go and ride it. Add a few more drops every month or two. By the forth or fifth month, soak the chain in lacquer thinner re-oil and go racing.
