Kel-Tech PMR 30
 

I'm mulling over the purchase of one of these.
It seems the marriage of the .22 Mag round and a semi-auto pistol have a checkered past. Any info would be appreciated.

Snipper was looking to buy one...

I also love the idea! I was thinking of this as a possible concealed carry piece last year.

However, I think they stopped making them as they were running into issues. Were they able to fix the problems and are now selling again? Check that part out before investing. The issues I read about and saw kept me from buying one, and I REALLY wanted one. Stayed with what I had and spent the money elsewhere.


A .22MAG is a GREAT round and will do some damage!

A nice Ruger Single Six with both barrels will also gain you a .22MAG.

Is the end run on this for a personal protection piece?

Since my original post I have found that:
They stopped making them
They've started again with a re-design or the rifling twist to stop "key holing".
The gun is in high demand.
Kel Tech is slow at producing the things.....how does a 12 month waiting list sound. I've yet to bounce this off my local spoon store.....but the day is young.
At gun shows the price is through the roof.

The gun is for fun & home defence. That 30 round mag makes up for lack of stopping power, me thinks. My arthritic thumbs preclude a single action pistol.....just noticed that a couple weeks ago. Getting old sucks again.

Try shooting a .22MAG! How many perps are 400 pounds? I'm shooting a .22LR through the M4 and it stops a standard size dog/coyote. But yep, the ability to easily put several rounds into the same target is GREAT!!!!

Sorry about the arthritis! I do like revolvers and 1911's best, but that is me.

There are some good DA revolvers, S&W (I usually do not like but that is my issue) makes some very fine DA revolvers with good trigger feel at a good price.

Glock and their ilk also have DA pistols that might work well. A GEN 3 or 4 G19 might be a good choice to look into. 15 round magazines are widely available and a 9mm is adequate. There are several other choices available.

I've seen both of the above go for far less than the $500.00 level. I'm sure there are some Pelicans near you who would let you try their pieces at a range. If you were close by you could come out and try in our backyard.

Thanks, James, that is interesting reading. One would think that these teething problems would be resolved before the thing was put on the market. I hope Kel Tech's helicopter bits are better prepared.

But.....I like the idea of the -30 and will pursue that till something dissuades me.
.22 mag is my round of choice but I still haven't got Mr. Henry out to the range......the cold wet weather is keeping me by the home fires.....must be gettin' old.:rolleyes:

.223 pistols are all over the place. They were not the first and won't be the last to make one.

So, the local spoon store has the PMR 30 on back order and this has been so for a long time. Apparently Kel Tec is popping out about 500 a month of the things.
They quoted me a price of $335......if they get one.

The Internet auction sites have them listed starting at $450 and go up rapidly to over $550-600.....I'll pass.

The LSS has both Walther & Sig semi autos in .22LR....10 round clip. I'll prolly get one of these and then get 1st in line at the LSS for the Kel Tec. I've had worse plans.:rolleyes:

Don't get me wrong, I like Kel-Tec, but I wouldn't buy any new model in the first two years. They are notorious for having issues when they are new on the market. Also, Kel-Tec is notorious for announcing a new product, and taking years to get production really going. The Sub 2000, RFB, KSG, and PM 30 have all had issues when new, and have been exceedingly rare for the first few years.

I hadn't ever really considered looking into any kel-Tec's ever. Then I checked this out. the I checked out their other products.


I think I want 1 of everything they make.

I could see how a small arms company could have production and quality issues, however. Good firearms are tricky business.

After watching the girl with the Kel Tec in my carry class fight with her gun after nearly every shot, I've got no interest in ever shooting one. Seriously, the little bastard wouldn't even empty a whole mag reliably.....

Quite a number of companies have tried to make a reliable self-loading rifle in .22 mag.
Much more difficult to do so with a handgun.

The fella at the LSS said that there is a very specific (in the owners manual) method for loading the magazines. If you don't follow instructions feed problems will result, says he. It involves taping the mag to seat the rounds properly in a certain manner while feeding in the rounds. I've never seen the procedure.... it sounded like a PITA but not a show stopper. 30 rounds may be a bridge too far but it would be worthwhile to me to do it right.....kinda like 911 engine assembly.:D

LOL a 30 round magazine certainly is appealing. I bet someone on a handgun forum has a simple fix for any issues with it. Just like the fixes for that god-awful sig mosquito.

I was looking at the mosquito and caught an earful from the LSS guy.
The Walther P 22 (?) has a more appealing size (pick a pocket) & no specific ammo requirements. Washington state has a good CC permit law.....I think you have to be able to walk & chew gum at the same time. Gotta practice that some.
