How to be that thin -- anorexia, or starvation.

Look at all the other girls around her. They are healthy. She is not. One has to wonder what kind of message the pageant judges are sending to young women.

+1

I would like these contests to enforce a minimum BMI.

The best way to protect your girls from this crap is to not watch these competitions. Another reason TV got banned from my house long time ago.

Good for her. +1.

On the second link, she sounds intelligent and seems to be mature and have a balanced attitude about the contest. Maybe her being 26 instead of 20 makes a difference. Doesn't sound like the stereotypical airhead.

As for her slim figure, YMMV. In her bikini, she looks fine to me. Others may prefer a more robust figure. Go for it. Be an official judge and you too can make a difference.

LOL - Sherwood - that's the LAST thing I can imagine for myself: judge at a beauty pageant.

Doesn't sound like bad duty. Do your part for world peace and harmony.

Are there apprenticeship positions for beauty contest judges? Just asking. I understand it takes years to be qualified to judge others.

My GF knows her. She's a sweet girl.

She looks thin in a few photos, but I'm not sure how much of that is genes and how much is pagent prep.

We have a very large Hmong community here and they're pretty excited to be represented.

Asian women can maintain a thin figure for a large part of their lives, so she probably didnt starve herself.

I thought it was interesting....most likely she and her family were processed through the same refugee camp that my family and I went through when we escaped from Laos.

Soukus, was it the Phanet Nikom(sp?) camp? When was it? My brother was running the English-relocation part of that camp in the '80s for a while, (assisting refugees that were going to be re-located to English speaking countries).

I don't know which camp (we stayed in two during the 9 months or so in Thailand). It was 1979 and i remember French missionaries, not Americans. I was very young and probably blocked a lot of memories.

Harsh little face on her. I couldn't imagine her winning anything.

@soukus, 1979 would have been slightly before his time. He graduated from HS that year, I think he was there around '82. The one he worked at, (whose name I'm probably mangling), was the one featured in "The Killing Fields" book and movie. I'll ask him for dates and details when we speak next.

It sounds like a very interesting journey you've had in life, from escaping Laos as a toddler to becoming a success in America that can afford to own sports cars. Good for you, man.

Yeah, where does it say that she is married? One of us has bad reading comprehension and I think it's not me.

I remember way back in 1978 as a little boy, this young couple that lived next door to us use to tell my parents stories about their journey fleeing Cambodia to Thailand's refugee camp. The people they lost along the way. Many years later, it still makes me tear up, like right now. One can read 1000 books and see hundreds of movies, it is never as powerful as hearing it from the people who live through hell.

I say more power to her. Putting her family first is somewhat rare in young people these days.

Yeah. One of those times in history when we (or some country) should have intervened and tried to stop the carnage before an estimated 1.7 - 2.5 million people were murdered.

On the other end of the spectrum, this is a pretty humorous scene in a movie that includes a Hmong character. It doesn't hurt to have Clint Eastwood in it.
