Question About Springfield M1A rifle?
Question for gun expert or M1A expert here on the Pelican Board
I went shooting last weekend but when I finished shooting I noticed couple pieces fell of the gun. (pic attached) It looks like firing pin or extractor rod / spring??? Is this something I can just place back together by taking apart or need to take to a gun shop? thanks http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1328558160.jpg |
Not a gun buff.
Here is a pdf of a Springfield - I can see those two parts in an exploded view on page 35. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CDcQ FjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fpdf.textfiles.com%2Fmanuals% 2FFIREARMS%2Fspringfield_m1a.pdf&ei=60wwT8_QKcHk0Q HlhczQCg&usg=AFQjCNEFf_MUWibKyryAxLM4RiH41aLNiQ&si g2=X2w4usv0tPxQiTsE-Ur0Ng |
firing pin on the left, yes,
but the extractor is way smaller in the pdf.. I don't see anything else like it? |
Again, not a gun buff, but part #7 in the pdf is called an "ejector / ejector spring" It looks comparable in size to the OP's part on the right and both the ejector and firing pin are in the bolt - but I don't know if they are connected or how they are held into the bolt.
The extractor - #6 - is definitely way smaller. |
Hmmm, the toubling part is those should not have been able to come out/fall out at all. Something might be loose or damaged???? What type of round were you shooting? Is this a classic GI piece or a modern piece? They eat different types of ammo, but I'm sure you already knew that.
I believe the left is the firing pin, right ejector but I'm generally wrong on these things. I would find a smith or other person capable of helping you locally. |
You have lost your extractor which holds the firing pin in. See if you can find a GI extractor.
|
looks like part #'s, 4 and 7 to me. You prolly lost parts 5 or 6 or both.

must have lost the extractor while shooting, never had this happen before |
rare this happens but it does. more than likely if you LOOK , YOU were shooting 180 gr bullets which these rifles HATE! 147 gr nato or 168gr period. no poo on this.
ask me how i know. yer parts went into low lunar orbit, so just BUY (2) so to have a spare, from fulton armory. you WILL NEED the BOLT TOOL avail from fulton armory to put extractor extractor spring, firing pin, firing pin spring back together again. only BUY USGI parts and thats what fulton sells. the root cause is the POWDER ,different burn rate. or the part just failed. mine made it about 30rds with 180gr remingtons and did the exact same thang. a classic WTF, until we asked the GURUS, aka phil arrington at arringtonaccuracy.com now repeat after me: 147gr or 168 gr BOOLITS ONLY! |

m-14forum.com will give you a step by step blow by blow read for how to use bolt tool and put it all back together.
this is something i never expected to happen. but it did and we found out why(180gr burn rate) these rifles were never designed as in the inner gas workings jiving with 180gr powders. when this happened, it sent me over the edge for buying ALL the spares for them. and you will find out there somewhat spendy. and when ya own (3) of them..............................$$$$$$$$$$$$$ X$$$$$$$$ but now having all the spares in the unlikely event of failure i have a nice warm fuzzy now. toptip: get a decent sniper drag bag. go to sadlak or smith enterprise here in tempe,az. and buy ALL THE GAS CLEAN OUT TOOLS and combo tool /cleaning kit for it. billricca.com also sells m-14 goodies USGI. i also use a blackhawk cheek pouch. so btwn stuffing the basic usgi combo tool and cleaning kit into stock(if you have the 2 hole stock) and all the basic field repair parts into cheek pouch i have enuff for field repairs. back at camp or truck i have the sniper drag bag with the bolt tool and all the clean out tools to take the entire damn thing apart out in BFE or at a match. i have owned mine for 20+ years now and this was the 1st time i had ANY FTE or FTF on them and i have shot a hell of alot of pretty nasty surplus ammo without a hiccup. my extractor flew into low lunar orbit in the middle of the dez after a string of 10rds fired into the hillside. then the "dreaded click". amazingly i found the extractor and extractor spring on the dirt about 3 feet away from where i was standing. all in all a pretty robust rifle. this fubar was on my socom. never had it happen on my SAI super duper match mcmillian stocked stainless kreiger barrel rifle nor my sons mcmillian stocked arrington custom built "loaded" version. east coast:billricca.com and fultonarmory.com west coast: arringtonaccuracy.com or smithenterprise.com |
