WOW. This is some great ****! |
Sounds interesting.

Downloading it all from iTunes as I type this. I've gotten every album the day it came out since Women and Children First.

I need to give it a lot of listens. I'm the biggest Rush fan there is and it took a year for me to stop hating their last album, let alone start liking it.
I'm a few tunes into the new VH album. First impressions are - super, powerful vibe, Eddie definitely still has it....but.... too many overdubs. No way to pull that stuff off live. |
This is off the Gene Simmons Demo.

Looks like a lot of it is just old club days stuff. |
I'm used to VH albums being a snoozer thanks to Hagar. There are a lot of good tracks on this one....
Still crankin it. |
Unfortunately DLR sounds really rough when he sings high. I actually like it when he's down in a lower register but the classic VH vocal screams are almost unlistenable imho.
That is based on the tune posted at the beginning. Some guys/bands age elegantly and find a way to make their shortcomings work. imho metal/hard rock doesn't lend itself to that kind of aging. About the only guy who I think pulls it off is Lemmy. |
|
I like it--takes a couple listens, and don't care much for "tatoo", but otherwise, good.
Already have my tickets for the 3/30 show in Pittsburgh |
I just ordered the CD. I am a computer geek but a physical CD that I can rip the way I want and put on all my devices makes too much sense to me.

motorhead = my favorite band i will say, their new DVD reveals to me at least, that their days are numbered. Lemmy seems to really struggle with his vocal power. As a smoker, i can hear his lung damage. it saddens me. Instrumentally, they are still the most powerful rock and roll band on the planet |

what are you confused about
|
With a name like ramonesfreak.... well, you know...
|
i have two obsessions. motorhead and the ramones. motorhead takes the no. 1 spot though, for number of outstanding songs and length of career and plain old rock and roll spirit
their not being in the RnR hall of fame is a real head scratcher to me |
A buddy of mine in LA has worked with Lemmy and says he's the funniest guy you'll ever meet. He's got a video of Lemmy cutting some back-up vocals in his studio, continually making faces and cracking everyone up. It's evident that Lemmy lives for rock n' roll in the most genuine way.
|
awsome. i would cut off my legs with a swiss army knife to be able to work with lemmy

Private "Friends and Family" show at the Forum tonight, 2/8

Can't play the video...it says that it is not available in this country. :(

Gave it a more thorough listen while at the gym today. Eddie and Dave sound super and together they are greater than the sum of their parts. Just stellar performances by both.
As for the arranging and production, I'm not liking it. Every track has a lot of guitar overdubs, meaning they'd have to hire a second guitar player to remotely pull this stuff off live. And Eddie is already such an amazing rhythm player. Why do two parts here? So much of the early stuff shows off his skills as a soloist and rhythm player with minimal overdubs. Why not keep that going? And I'm just not a fan of his new guitar brand and sound. I played one of the new Wolfgang Stealths at NAMM and it didn't give me the warm and fuzzies and espeically not for the $$ they get for them. I watched a steady stream of excellent players come by and play old VH stuff through his new amps and I saw a VH tribute band here a few weeks ago where the guitarist had sprung for one of the new EVH amps. I don't know how to describe the sound, but the classic "brown sound" it ain't. One of the great things about old VH is that his rig was so low tech and thrown together that it demonstrated to the kids (like me) who couldn't afford fancy gear that it's really all in your head and hands, not in yout rig. I found the mastering to sound so crunchy that it made my earphones crackle, even though I didn't have it as loud as I usually do for other music. Too much compression on everything. But then I'm very picky, have sensitive ears, know what I like and don't feel obligated to slobber all over it just because it's VH and I'm a lifelong fan. Some of the ball washing on the fan sites is sickening. No critical thought whatsoever. I'm sure it will grow on me and I look forward to learning how to play some of it to see how it compares in technique and groove to the old stuff. |
From yesterday's private friends and family show.....

Pretty much his standard live solo for the last few decades, but with a few twists. He's definitely been keeping the chops up. I like the on/off toggle switch he put on that guitar, which is not on the rest of them. It's a cool effect. He had that on the old shark guitar from the cover of Women and Children First, which he used to record You Really Got Me where you can hear him cut in and out at the end of that guitar solo.
