Some Dude Just Offered to Buy My Car

..I went out to put a piece of mis-delivered mail into the mailbox, and this guy was in my driveway. He had a pickup truck across the street with another guy in it.
He asked if my car was for sale and gave me a business card in case I ever was interested.

Good to know there's still a market for 34year old sexy cars!

But now I'm a little worried someone is trying to steal my car.

Man, I wish I had a garage.

Anyways, the chrysler is parked at work while mrs. szyzygy is in Europe for the next few days.

The cirrus isn't that bad. Leather interior, v6, automatic. 76K miles. Just needs new brakes.
Riding in it feels like bouncing down the street in a puffy cloud...I don't like that. But it has some get-up-and-go which I DO like.

Might be nothing more than a compliment. Might not.

There is definitely interest in older Porsches. I have has similar offers (but never in front of my house), but I have a garage to keep it from being an easy grab. If you can't garage it, this might be a great hint to get Lojack installed and call it peace of mind.

He gave me a card, seems like something a thief wouldn't do.

I have an alarm system. I will look into the lojack thing.

How many car thieves could even drive our cars? Kids these days can't drive stick, let alone a 915 tranny. Or can they?

Well, we have plenty of scam artists in the area "painting" houses - they have biz cards. Cheap to make and gives an image of trustworthiness. If the biz checks out then that might be something to rely on.

People who covet your car can certainly drive it. The casual thief - maybe not so much.

Still, 'tis better to protect than try to replace.

good advice, thanks.

I'm not looking to sell anyways.

His card said he did repairs, too, so I asked him what his hourly rate was. He didn't have an immediate answer, I took him for a BS artist.

today I saw an old red 356 parked on Temple dr. in Laguna beach, as well as that same car that looks super rare I mentioned on here before. it's for sale. Has a huge hood, like it could fit a v20 or something. I really need to snap a pic.

I've had lots of offers to buy my car, both from folks who knew my dad and total strangers. The folks that knew my dad, I just smile and shake my head... the strangers I send to the 356 Registry website and forums.

A friend of mine who is a Porschephile was at an estate sale last week and there was a so so '74 911 stock except for supposedly a turbo motor and receipts for 20K in work in the last few years. The owner had died, but it was his from new. No word on the motor being a 3.3 or simply a sammyg conversion.

The car had a not very well taken care of respray with glass in place. Apparently that was not hard to spot. the interior was good but not great; wrong seats.

Sold at a silent auction for 13.5. I thought that was ridiculously strong.

So, ssyygyyzz (or however it goes), what kind of number was this cat talking? In my mind unless he asked what would it take to buy it today, he's kicking tires to impress his friend.

Your garage makes it sound like it's a 930.
I got it a few months ago. It's has the 2.7L and 915 tranny. Yes, they put real steel flares on. It used to be a turbo, I'm told.

he didn't name a price. maybe he was trying to impress his friend. Not sure. I was walking out to my mailbox while he was walking up my driveway. He has a business card. His name is Joey Gay.

That sounds like how I sold my '76 911S.

I had decided I was ready to part with it, the interested buyer was actually a guy who lived in the same street and he left a message with my realtor when we sold (he later told me he had watched in envy, as I would howl past every few days for about 5 years) and so I never even had to advertise it. I didn't realize at the time, that he was the friendly dog-walking neighbor who'd linger at my mailbox and ask questions about it every time I had it out for a wash in the driveway.

I just regret that I moved out of the area and don't get to see it regularly anymore.

Not that it necessarily applies here but one city scam variation is to grab a bunch of business cards typically found in a restaurant "free drawing" bowl and pass them out to folks in exchange for $20 sidewalk "distress" loan (along the lines of 'I lost my wallet and need cab fare to get home'). The mark is drawn in by the notion that if provided a business card, the guy must be legitimate.

You might consider pulling the car's rotor when you're gone...
