Is Word Press that hard to use?

I have done quite a bit of graphics in Office but I'm reluctant to pay the MS ransom to continue. MS has disabled my so called one time purchase apps that reside on old computers. I never had Office on this one.

I have a website and Green Geeks did me good with registering and putting up a site for me on a special. They installed WP or gave me access to WP to update my site. I can't get anywhere with it even though I can navigate Photoshop and video editing apps (I've used 3).

So I bought a new domain and there is nothing there, I don't even have a host for it. GG isn't playing nice to me to do this again, so I might choose another cheap shared host. But for what I need, I could do this in Word as a "web page" and upload it. Read the part about the yearly ransom. Not happening if I can get around it.

Supposedly WP is wide spread or they would like you to think so. It is in no way intuitive. The tutorials leave me dazed. What should I do just to put even an "under construction" page up?

Wordpress has a lot of security issues, and if you want to do anything not provided directly out of the box it requires a higher level of skill.

So.... what kind of website do you want? A basic business card? Just a place to post photos to share online? Just learning basic HTML and how to use a FTP client (well, SFTP or SCP... but same thing) could be all you need, which is really really trivial. And TBH there is nothing wrong with having the equivalent of a digital business card for a website....

On the other hand if you want dynamic, database driven, fancy and responsive web pages, etc. then that is a whole different ball of wax....

No, no, you had it right at first. If you looked at OddJobFix you'd know what I have and all I need at this time. Although I certainly know what HTML is and can see how it works even here in quotes, I never got past FTP client. In fact, I can't get the info fill-in form to forward to my email on the OJF site. All GG tells me is to do this and do that in WP. They have given me all the info to enter it, but IDK how do to do that.

I'm relieved that I'm not that stupid. Remember, I grew up when typewriters in school and at home (if you even had one) were manual. When I was registering for classes in college, they had a punch card system set up in the gym. But there were no classes about data then. So I graduated not knowing WTF COBOL was.

I'll tell you a funny story. Rich grandma gave my step daughter (B. 1973) a Commadore 64 in '82 or 83. I was the only person to get one letter to print. I think it was a W. The surfer dude across the street got the first Apple with windows and a mouse. I probably asked him if he wanted to borrow a trap.

In '93 we got a computer from rich grandpa's law office and I cracked that thing to read all of his cases left on the drive. I've never told anyone that before. In '95 my wife went back to college and we got what was a hot rod for its day, Netscape and the whole deal. I probably didn't have an email address until 2007.

Most of the CMS (Content Management Systems) are pretty simple. I think wordpress would be fine for putting up basic informational pages.

I wouldn't try and conduct actual commerce there for reasons of security mentioned.

THe tough part could be getting your domain transferred to a new provider. Do your homework there before pulling the trigger.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish?
Copying your old site, or creating a different one?

If all you need is basic HTML
like you can do with MS Word
then use a free online editor

Not exactly your question but you can get MS Office Pro 2021 Lifetime for $39.99 through Sweet Deals website. Worked great for me when I bought a new computer.

GG is probably fair in price if all they do is host. I've seen those unofficial MS Office apps for sale. MS doesn't support them and can flip the switch at any time and you wasted 40 bucks. One seller mentions that.

Hey Zeke, I used Wix for my artglass website. I took the time and found a template
that would work and then plugged all my images and text in. I'm very happy with
how it turned out. Took some time but I got what I was after. Sent you a Pm with
my website to check it out.

How are you using Office to create websites BTW? Saving a word doc as HTML code?

General rule for just about every CMS, if you want a standard site and there is a template that fits your business they are easy to use.

There are plug ins for stuff like ecommerce, galleries, videos, etc..... that make them fairly plug n play.

If you need custom content then they can tend to get more difficult than if you coded something from scratch.

The one thing that applies to everything whether you code from scratch or use an out of the box template is content.

People will peruse templates and find some great looking stuff but when they use that template for their site it looks like ass because, they have garbage for visuals and lack content. Often it pays to get professional photography done.

Think of it as looking at a house staged with furniture from Fendi and it looks awesome so you buy it then are disappointed when you move your **** from Rooms To Go into it and it doesn't look as nice.

I haven't yet used Word for a web page. I just saw that you could save it as HTML so I assumed that was what it was for. I have used Word to design biz cards and Publisher to create a newsletter.

The problem I have with templates is that I can't see in my mind where my stuff fits in. When I edit videos I ignore all the graphics available. I just put the video up with the content out of the camera and mostly narrate with a voice over.

I keep it simple. A pro would definitely benefit me but I don't have the money to put into this new venture that is in beta stage itself. Once I do a dozen repairs using a new medium not widely known (non toxic wood rot repair is the objective), I can validate the process simply by example. A pic is worth a 1000 words. A video is worth 10X that if done correctly and not just BS.

I don't think Word will help you.

Any content you put in there will be embedded in the doc - or reference external files that once you upload will not be accessible.

THe editors in wordpress and other DIY website tools are designed for online content and are even simpler to use in Word. I'm sure most have a free trial that you can test out for a few hours. I'd strongly suggest starting there and seeing what you can do.

Word will work if your goal is an utter complete ****ing mess of a page.

Why do you think this?
Converting WYSIWYG document into HTML is 20 year old technology at this point.
What do you think Google Docs is?

Not many websites that are pure html any more. That’s what he means. Try having something that looks ok on a phone and a monitor without JavaScript and it’ll be a pile of spaghetti.

Wordpress has more holes than Swiss cheese and script kiddies love it. If you don’t do it for a living - or have a lot of time to spend and a technical bent - pay someone that does for a basic site.

Worse case - if you are cheap or stubborn - use one of godaddy’s ootb setups.

Not think, know.

Because to generate this,

When exported as HTML from Word you get this for code, NOTE: was going to paste the code directly but the whole thing is like 46,000 characters and the forums have a limit of 10,000 per post

Instead of this,

Now, you can use filtered html export from Word and get something more reasonable but still highly inefficient bloated code.

Someone who doesn't know enough to not use Word to build pages won't know the difference in options.
