OT Gun owners

This is definetly ot, but here goes. I have read a few things on gun ownership here lately and as fate would have it I got some news today.

I am a gun owner, mainly handguns. Well in my hometown we have to get a doctors letter now to renew our L.T.C. Now how many doctors are going to put their necks on the chopping block so I we can have our permits.

For all of you folks who enjoy the freedom to carry and own guns outside of Ma. pay attention I think this is going to spread.

Curt, there you go again, looking for logic in government actions. There seldom is any. Also, keep in mind, this is the great state of Mass. Home of the Ted Kennedy driving and diving school.

Bro, you have 30 guns in the house with four kids? I hope you have a good, and large enough, gun-safe. Good-looking family, BTW.

Empty the safe????? Are you saying that if they don't renew your permit, you are not allowed to keep your guns on your own property?! Please tell me that's not true! -- Curt

What's a L.T.C? Is it just a liscense to own a gun, or what they refer to in CA as a CWP (concealed weapons permit)? CWP's are VERY difficult to get here, but my Dad, (MR. NRA president locally) was able to get one. You have to get it signed off by the sherriff, take an 8 week course & pass both a shooting & written test.

Next they'll want your first born!

Let me guess ... you probably can't buy anything in .50 AE or .50 BMG now in MA, right?

Thank GOD for Texas! Warren, what's the tax structure there? Oregon is rapidly becoming a people's republic, & Cindy and I are thinking of fleeing. Portland, the State's largest city, is now being referred to as "Moscow on the Willamette" in some quarters. Because of the pioneer and sporting tradition, plus the $$$ from hunting licenses, they haven't gone into the anti 2nd amendment tirade as deeply as Mass., but in all other areas, we're getting there. Tough to think of leaving the town you were born in, but we're thinking of becoming political refugees. Big P? You might want to consider doing the same...Mass., in a nutshell, sucks....Camelot still rules there, and JFK has been gone for nearly 40 years. Oh, Warren? .50 was recently banned from my local gun club range...because of noise regulations, we're told... incrementalism, I figure.

You could try Michigan, Paul. Well, at least through the end of the year!! Our young attractive liberal Democrat A.G. Jennifer Granholm is pretty much a lock on the Governorship. Women will vote for her in droves. Because she's a woman. And ONLY because she's a woman. Her politics don't matter. It's really pathetic. So what's this got to do with guns? About 2 years ago, the laws changed to make Michigan a true right-to-carry State. Local gun boards MUST issue a CCW permit barring a criminal record, mental problems, etc.

Of course, the anti-gunners predicted gunfights in the streets and on the roads. It would lead to anarchy they said!! Well, it's been well over a year and ya know what? Crime's down and there have been NO gun incidents related to the new law. Granholm will be sure to repeal this as her first order of business -- Curt

According to the constution, you don't need a permit to carry a gun. I wouldn't worry about it. I own several guns/rifels/shotguns and do have a permit which lets me carry them conceiled. However, I do not need a permit to own a gun. If I decide to carry a pistol/hand gun with me just strap it on my belt and nobody can say a word.

The problem with today's society is when you ask someone what a gun is for the reply is "to protect or shoot someone". When I was growing up and you asked someone what a gun was for the answer would naturally be for hunting.

Our society is so screwed up that we need counselors in our schools when someone dies. What that leads to is a society that will become a bunch of wimps who won't know how to deal with problems and eventually will become psychotic.

Just a comment

In Ma. posession of a handgun without a permit is a 1 year mandatory sentence. Or 50k in a legal battle. Also anyone ask me why I own a gun my response is usually, For all proper purposes.

Stormcrow to carry a pistol (concealed or not) in most cities you must have a CWP...you cant strap on a gun and walk around downtown most cities I know. In some rural areas it is possible without a permit to carry openly but not concealed.. For all concerned there is an excellent booklet called Traveler's Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States. Definitely worth a few dollars to make sure you are on the right side of the law as it differs in each state.

A little known fact in Michigan (and many other states) is that it has always been perfectly legal to carry a sidearm. The problem comes in when you attempt to transport it in a vehicle or conceal it. But if you had a gun in a holster in plain view and walked from your home to wherever you were going, you're legal. -- Curt

Thank God for Georgia. Here they apologize for making you wait the 5 to 15 minutes it takes for the GBI to confirm you are not wanted or insane.

If you have a carry permit (and George is a "shall issue state"), then there is no wait at all to purchase. Only Texas could be more liberal... I am told the troopers offer you a selection to choose from as you cross the state line.

Meanwhile back in Canada they want to ban semi-automatic rifles. Of course all firearms are registered. And if you want a pistol well you must be a killer or bank robber. Which is hypocritical when you consider that Canada is one of the world leaders in exporting firearms and munitions. It's okay to make 'em as long as they don't sully our country.

Thank God for Georgia, my new home.

I know several doctors in my city who are avid shooters. Here they tend to be anesthesiologists (because they come and go from the hospital late at night) and ophthalmologists (because they have nothing else to do, I guess). Suggest you ask your local gun ranges or police who are the doctors who pack. I presume this is somehow linked to profiling people who carry with regard to their mental character. Suggest you look into the website: www.packing.org for more information too.
