Automotive bucket list

What do you want to own before you die? Doesn't matter how stupid, unreliable or impractical it is, but it should be within reason of attainability/affordability. Oh, and let's load the thread with car porn

Here's mine:
1. Delorean. Forget Marty McFly, I've loved these since they were sold brand new. One day I'll own one. It may only be for a few months, but I will. It's the only car on the planet my wife wants as much as I do. Maybe more.
2. Citroen 2CV. Just because they're ridiculous. Like the Delorean, I'll probably only keep it a short time.
3. Ferrari 308. One of the most beautiful cars of all time. I just have to figure out how I'm going to get out of it after a year or 2 without losing my shirt.
4. Countach. See reasons for #3

I've driven Porsches on the race track- Both Driver Ed and actual wheel-to-wheel racing.

My interest is waning, but I've always said I wanted any Ferrari with wire wires and a 12. The 330 is one of less cost.

However, I might be ready to settle for an XJS 12. I've never even been near one, but people say....

in chronological order:

1) 964 C4. Not my favorite 911, but my favorite car for a daily driver. So far (3 weeks) has proven to be a shockingly practical car, aside from the terrible city mileage


2) Mercedes e500 4matic wagon. We already have a c320 wagon, but it's a bit tight. I made the mistake of testing an e500 and they are just *a m a z i n g*. perfectly practical, but perfectly insane too. Seem like good value as 20-22k used cars. Would want magnaf lows.


3) Jag Etype coupe. Prettiest shape ever pressed into steel. I was in NYC and saw a tatty "driver" '68 coupe for 25k. Watching ebay, there are occasionally other similar cars for under 30k. Hard to imagine those kind of prices will still be around in 5 years or so.


4) Lamborghini Espada: Saw one at John Scotti's in Montreal, and have been obsessed since. A beautiful car in person, and they REALLY DO fit 4 adults. And they can be had for 40-60k.



5) Ferrari 365/400/412 2+2 5 speed. I've seen a few online sell between 25-40k. I love the idea of a v12 Ferrari, and these are the only ones that seem to be somewhat attainable. And as ungainly as they sometimes seem in pictures, I think they are STUNNING in person.

I've already checked off several that were on my list- Type 1 VW beetle (everyone has to have one once), Boxster S, and now the S2 Lotus Elise.

That's really it for cars that I must own regardless of what I have to do. There is obviously a ton of vehicles that I want to own, but I don't find them to be a matter to which I need to build my life around. The few above cars... yes.

I hat muscle cars when I was younger. Not hardcore, big block muscle cars, but reasonably fun, fast V-8 American cars. I've had a 911, and now I've got a turbo miata.

Cars that I would really like to own before I die

I'd like another Porsche, I'm not sure which one, but I'll have another. It may be a longhood, or another <89, or it may be a 964 or 993 or boxster. After owning this turbo miata, I have a hankerin' for a turbo 911. I really like the look of the '77-89 cars, but I could probably be talked into a 965 or 993t. I just don't know, but I'm going to have at least one more.

What would I like to own that's realistic?

Lotus/Caterham 7
Something like one of these. I like the look of the clamshell fenders, but I think I'd rather have the cycle fenders. There's just something about being able to see the front tires and suspension moving around...




Another toy car that I'd like to have...
Beck 550. (because there's no way I could have a real 550). To me the 550a is a beautiful car. It's one of the cars that really captures the fluid beautiful style of the sports cars of the 50s and 60s.


Another car that I'd like to have is a RHD original mini. The original is so much better looking than the new ones which is impressive, because I think the new ones are cute.


I have a passing interest in Chevy Corvairs, but I don't know that I have a strong desire to own one. I may have another muscle car, but it'd probably only be if a good deal falls into my lap and happen on an impulse.



I don't know that I'd like to own a V-12, but I'd like to get the opportunity to drive a Ferrari or Lambo V-12. I might even be able to make due with a Jag 12, but it would have to be an older model. I came up behind one of these when I was on the freeway once and slowly passed him. The sound made the hair on the back of my neck stand up and he was just cruising along. It's not the prettiest car Ferrari ever made, but it's pretty nice.

I'd prefer something a bit older...

An E-type would be nice. I've always loved those, and the wife does too.

couple of muscle cars, maybe a '65 Impala SS 396 4spd or big block chevelle 4spd (a V-8 rumble with a carb, big cam and no cats is hard to beat), few old Porsches like '67R, '73RS, 550, 904, 908, 917. I'd also have a GT40, one of the originals, not a new one.

I really love the sports cars from the 50s and 60s. The new ones have phenomenal performance, but I'm not sure they've got the character of the old cars.








I like the 289 cobras better than the 427 cobras.

Now that the muscle car bubble has deflated a bit, decent GTOs can be had for >$20K. I'd love to have something close to what carried me to school as a kid. '68 or '69, dark green with a black vinyl top...

Happy to say, pretty much none!

I've been a huge car fan since I was 10 years old, read and memorized every car mag, etc. etc. etc.

Owned a lot of cool cars, too. And drooled and schemed over a lot more.

But for reasons that I don't really understand, I don't have a desire to own them anymore. All of those high priced, high maintenance cars above - would love to see them at a car show, or driving down the road. Would love if my neighbor had some of them! But don't want them in my garage, don't have any desire to own them.

(I will admit, though, I'd still like a really nice driver quality, stock MFI 72 or 73 911S or E, that I would drive 5-6 times a week).

I had that, sort of. The gull-wing SL is the icon, but I think if I was going to own one, it would be the convertible.

Pretty much describes my thinking as well. Except I've BTDT with a MFI car, so scratch that as well. I also understand the reason...a collectable car coveted by others can be a REAL PITA, and not necessarily because of the monetary cost.

I would really like a magic Targa With breath taking looks, superior performance, gearing, and a supple suspension with handling finesse. I would have to sell a few things and be patient, but this is doable. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get my hooks unstuck from any of my current cars to sell any of them without leaving claw marks...

Already own it but can't get the time to change the clutch ( engine/gearbox out job) 'cos my 924S is sucking up my time needing an engine change.
