For Nostatic and Targa
There are other bass players here and I don't mean to slight them but N and T are the premier BP guys here.
I cut my finger cooking a nice Valentines Day dinner for my sweetie. I was sectioning an already-cooked chicken with a sharp chef's knife and I did a real good job of cutting my left index finger. I have a gig tomorrow night. The wound has healed pretty darned good. It was DEEP. I plan to wrap it up good, but know that, still........it's gonna be pretty painful. I'm lookin' for some sympathy here. And maybe some more of "Superman.....you're CRAZY," but I'm really used to that, so I'd rather get sympathy. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329458027.jpg |
Crazy glue but leave the two ends open?
|
I've got Liquid Bandage in my arsenal, and some other stuff. I plan to see a medical person tomorrow, to get their input. I will likely tape something stiff onto my finger, to lessen the trauma. I don't really care about the pain (though....it's gonna HURT) but I just don't want to break the bond my body has created. It was/is a deep cut.
On a lighter note, Nostatic, I happened to give a good listen to Josie, by Steely Dan the other night. OMG. That guy's playing bass chords and messing with intonation at the same time. Most Steely Dan seems to be fairly straightforward but that later stuff...... pretty darned impressive. |
Use a pick!
...Ducking... :D Looks like your left hand though. Not that it's medical grade, but I'd probably go with the super glue as well. Travis Barker mentioned using it all the time so he could continue drumming with a cut. |
My exgfs dad used super glue to seal up cuts all the time, and he is a vet... Said its nearly the same as the medical stuff.
|
Sounds reasonable. I've been going through the songs with some tape and a bit of thin cardboard taped to my finger. I can see that:
1) I can do this. On most songs I can largely avoid using this finger. 2) On some songs, I can't. But I may be able to wrap it up better, and use SuperGlue and use the parts of my finger that don't hurt and...... 3) It's gonna hurt anyway. On some songs. We play Ramble On and Livin' Lovin' Maid and Funk #49 and some Doobie Brothers and other stuff that's gonna require The Finger. Maybe they'll give me some kickass pain killers..... |

yeah super glue. Index finger left hand? man that is in the worst possible spot on yer finger too. Put a finger bandage on it(yeah they call em that) and leave the tip exposed. You really play with the tip not the flat of yer finger. Good luck, been there. take extra bandaids they wear off through the night. Clean yer strings with nail polish remover or laquer thinner if they are rounds to get all the adhesive off them later.
|
I can't use the tip. Hurts like heck. I'm going to need the string to be closer to the first knuckle. When I do use it, which I will be able to largely avoid on most songs. I'm glad we play stuff like Tom Petty and John Mellencamp, as opposed to Stanley Clarke and John Entwhistle.
I may use superglue. If I can 'cap' the finger with something rigid, that might work. I won't be able to feel the string as well, but that would be the case anyway. It seems as though I have severed quite a few nerves. I can't feel most of the end of my finger. Until I put pressure on it, then WOW! Superglue and a finger bandage and some morphine. Kidding. Sort of. |
Just pretend you're Tommy Iommi make yerself some wooden tips.
|
people that say laughter is the best medicine have never had morphine.....
|
|
Take some Viagra and learn to fret with your Johnson... won't work very well but you will be all over youtube the next day!

Is that your middle finger on the left hand? That's tough - depending on your technique you might be pressing right on the cut.
I think your best bet is to simplify your lines and avoid using that finger. If it makes you feel any better, I started skype lessons last night with Anthony Wellington. Basically I've decided to "start over" on the instrument. He gave me his "24 variations" 4-finger sequence patterns along with 3 notes per string major scale positions. All done to a metronome. And you don't always start on the downbeat. Talk about frustrating/humbling... Maybe this will help. Rob finally finished my new 4-string :D http://nostatic.com/photos/d4-00.jpg http://nostatic.com/photos/d4-0.jpg http://nostatic.com/photos/d4-3.jpg http://nostatic.com/photos/d4-4.jpg http://nostatic.com/photos/d4-5.jpg |

Simplicity = hard work. Good luck with your gig, Supe. Remember what Patrick Swayze said in Roadhouse: "Pain don't hurt" |

And, I'm sure you know, you're in good company regarding lessons. Neil Peart did the same thing, decided he wasn't a good enough drummer and needed lessons from a Master. (This was years after he'd joined Rush.) |
Yup, another major piece of art work. Beautiful. Walnut?
The finger was traumatized a bit, but survived. I put a Liquid Bandage on as a first coat, then some cool medical tape that sticks but also breathes. Then I coated that with superglue. Had to rebuild it after Set 3. All is well. The audience danced their asses off. There was a bachelorette party at the club. Drunken bachelorettes make for good audiences. |
