ink jet cartridges past expiration date, still good?

I see folks on evil-bay selling replacement HP ink jet cartridges that have an expiration date of 2005, 2007, etc.
And they're cheeeep!

So anyone BTDT, are they still good or a waste of money?

TIA.

I tried to use some old HP cartridges last year, and the ink didn't dry, it would smear when touched.

Yup, in the past HP cartridges would not function properly past the expiration date.

Don't know about now.

My company formulates the ink for HP cartridges. I could ask some guys about the stability...

Sammy, check out the prices of refilled cartridges at Cartridge World. A great company in my experience.

Hi sammy, my friend is giving a great deal on their inkjet cartridges but these are expired ones. have you tried buying them from ebay? how was it? i was thinking if i would use and consume it all soon since i'd be doing a lot of printing then I can pull it off even if its expired. it just expired actually..

I've got this whole continuous ink feed system going for me on the Epson, for 100cc of each color (and there's 6) I paid around $30. I used to pay around $70 for 30cc of each color...insane. I thought I saw you could get the same for HP (although I haven't for mine...too old, I'm shopping newer ones).

As far as outdates, try it, if it works then great, if it doesn't work then buy a cartridge.

I couldn't resist. I bought a black one that exp. in 2007 and a color that exp in 2008. total cost to me was under $12. Same thing from fry's would be around $45.
Guess what?
They work great. As good as any new cartridge.

Did I get lucky? Maybe. But from now on I'll be buying expired cartridges from e-bay until I have one go bad.
At that price I'll still be way ahead.
