scrap value of catalytic converters
 
Anyone ever sold their old cat for scrap? I just removed the 23 year old one from my car. It's rusted completely into the muffler and the cross over, I may or may not be able to seperate the pieces, but nonetheless, a friend told me people buy old cats to salvage the rare metals that are inside of them.

Anyone ever sell their's? How did you go about it? What are they worth?

I can't attest to the values, but I know that people steal them from pickups and SUV's in parking lots all the time. It has happened a couple of times at my office and the wife's office.

You probably won't get more than $5-10 for it. Take it to your local scrap yard and see what they tell you.

Around here, the scrap yards don't let just anyone off the street bring items in anymore. The police have really been cracking down on them accepting stolen goods.(not that yours is stolen but you know what I mean).

Sold a 944 cat (huge SOB) for I think it was around $55 once.

I have a guy come in twice a month, I get from $40.00( small ones ,or ones where most of the honey comb has blown out)or up to $100.00 for the big euro ones .

There was a few cats stolen from trucks around here.
As price and demand goes up, the crumb snatching will continue.

Had one stolen off a Toyota 4x4 last summer. Since vehicle sits high, easy to get under with a battery powered sawzall....I was told the real money in is selling the factory units,the aftermarket does not have the same valuse...........

I got $20 for a very small one off the in-law's Corolla. They seemed to think it was worth 10x that much, from everything they heard in the news at the time.

Cats are either re-used or the honeycombs are crushed and sold in bulk ie 250 lb barrels. They contain 3-7 grams of platinum group metals (palladium, platinum, rhodium) and lose %70 percent of the metals as they age.
