Do I dare run a Fram oil filter?

So, I call Pelican first. No, we don't really do Jaguar. OK, I get online and see who is who in the online Jag parts biz. So I see some online seller up in Goleta (Santa Barbara). All I need is an oil filter and drain plug seal. These ass holes have 2 filters in their catalog, no pics and don't identify the brand. I've seen the Rock Auto selection from 3 bucks and up, so I pick the 15 dollar one along with a 6 buck seal.

Reamed to the max. They send me a $7 Fram (RA's price). The washer is a buck fifty at RA. I don't get fooked too often, but I did this time. I bought a fuel filter and air filter as well. All double the price now that I really research it.

The worst part is that, unlike Pelican, I don't get a tracking no. I inquire after 3 days and they tell me the stuff comes out of Michigan and takes awhile to get to the West Coast. No mention of that on their site. Pelican is 3 days to all points last I knew. You can't do much better than Pelican! Finally arrived today, 7 days.

Anywho, do I dare install this Fram POS? I mean the oil alone is 70 bucks. Oh, and it's says it's made in the UK on an added label but the box says E.U. And it's black with French written all over it. WTF?

In a word, No.

Nevermind, I found the skinny on this thing. It's the lower line Extra Guard, cardboard special.

I believe Mann produces the OEM filters.

I am so freaking excited to be back in a Jag!!!

Slight hijack - why do I always see vintage Ferraris with dual Fram filters? Are those different?

E38Driver 02-20-2012 09:37 PM

I can get you a mann oil filter for about 15 bucks. Should get it in a day or two. The fuel filter is about 23 bucks.

Honest to goodness, I have seen two Fram Filters that ruptured and spewed oil everywhere. One was on an f 250, and the other was on a Subaru. Both vehicles survived.

K&N makes a good oil filter. Fram=never.

Might as well run it. There are millions out there without a problem. I wouldn't want to run it because of the internets but you have it and it would be silly to trash it.

javadog 02-21-2012 05:13 AM

I wouldn't run it. I'd take the hit on the restocking fee and send all that crap back. I'd probably try to find a good deal at a dealer. If you look, they're out there. Lots of dealers discount parts to club members, etc.

Never seen or known anyone with a Fram failure.

Me neither, but they don't trap as fine particles as a better filter. Also, Frams have been shown to have poor anti drain valves. On the Jag, it sits horizontal so any draining is letting oil in the non filtered side drain back to the crankcase.

I'm getting a Mann.

Yeah, I used to use them for years, but now it is said that they can contain metal shavings left over from the assembly process. There are people who really hate them with a passion on some of the other forums I frequent, so it is easy for me to say just avoid them.

Purolator (made in USA) is a good filter...I also learned that Motorcraft (Ford) filters
are made by purolater. I forbet who makes the K&N brand filters for them. There was a thread here with links to a site where filters were cut open & compared. Let's just say Fram has great TV advertising...but Purolater has a better filter with a good check valve.
