I am surprised the Park Service would allow that. I guess the old "do it and ask forgiveness later" philosophy was used.

Erakad 02-21-2012 11:50 AM

Insane....but looks like fun, if you're so inclined. Nice color too.

uncle_scott 02-21-2012 11:53 AM

My hands sweat just watching that. I can't imagine!

masraum 02-21-2012 12:10 PM

looks like lots of fun!

TheMentat 02-21-2012 12:17 PM

Very cool... We used to do that on bridges when I was in high school, but that formation looks even better!

svandamme 02-21-2012 12:32 PM

Looks like a total blast.

vash 02-21-2012 01:56 PM

i would wear a wingsuit for safety. :D

myamoto1 02-21-2012 02:26 PM

Do a search on rock climber Dan Osman. He pretty much pioneered this. Of course, it's also how he died...

Rusty Heap 02-21-2012 02:52 PM

link to Dan Osman?

Many people have died without a smile on thier face. I salute Dan and his sense of adventure.

I mean how many people have been killed rocking a vending machine because their bags of Doritos didn't fall.................and why are the fragile chips always on the top shelf of a vending machine?

such are lifes mysteries.

Neilk 02-21-2012 03:21 PM

Awesome. making of the video was really interesting.

island911 02-21-2012 03:35 PM

Wile E Coyote would be proud.

Video sucks (camera work), but you get the idea.

It's good to hear vanilla ice has found work!

porsche4life 02-21-2012 06:16 PM

Not sure that is smart to be taking swingers like that... Generally we try to avoid big swingers like that whilst climbing. That is HELL on gear, not to mention the high probability of bashing into the rocks with quite a bit of force.... It'd be hella fun until someone was paralyzed or dead from it....

patssle 02-21-2012 06:21 PM

2 ropes and 2 harnesses please. You know...one for backup.

rusnak 02-21-2012 06:27 PM

I find parts of the video really gay, like a soft drink commercial being consumer-tastically over the top.

I got the hand sweat thing happening too  . If I did I, which I wouldn't anyway, I'd be the one person who threw up.

ShakinJoe 02-21-2012 07:54 PM

This was obviously at Arches National Park in Moab, UT. Cool video especially due to the fact that they would have been jailed if caught.

GWN7 02-21-2012 08:04 PM

It says it was filmed in Moab. It's quite a hike from the road to the arch. They could probably see any ranger and be long gone before the ranger could get up to them to make a arrest. :)

porsche4life 02-21-2012 08:21 PM

I also question the intelligence of posting video of yourself committing a possible federal offense on the internet....

look 171 02-21-2012 10:55 PM

This reminds me of the skaters who destroy public places skating on it. we use to sneak into pools and do stupid stuff too. I am not sure if the ropes do any damage to the arch? I suppose not. 8-9 years ago, I would say let do it. Now with my little kids, no thanks.

They did put anchors into the top of the arch (I'm assuming that's where the rope hung) according to the behind the scenes video: Behind The Scenes - World's Largest Rope Swing - YouTube

svandamme 02-21-2012 11:44 PM

The problem is not this video, or doing this just once..
But if more people like the idea, and they go there to do the exact same thing
then you will get increased erosion of the rock and potentially at some point one of em will go splat through some mistake.

now, one thing i wonder though, is rock climbing allowed there?
Because if it is, i would suppose that this should be viewed by the same standards. eg rock climbing also causes some damage to the rock, and if that's allowed, then so should the rope swing..

mikeferg75 02-22-2012 06:46 AM

That's Corona Arch, not in Arches NP, but just ouside Moab so no big deal :)

89911 02-22-2012 10:07 AM

Didn't we already see this?

The Big Swing - YouTube

This a great demonstration of the other end of the spectrum, when you have poorly trained morons performing stunts. Would of been nice to have them catch it on a nice GOPro camera so we could witness their pain in agony in HD.

Yes. It's on BLM land. There are already established routes to the top and many ways down. You can do pretty much what ever you want on BLM land.
