Also heard Frank Zappa's band knock out an unreal cover of this in Dallas about 30 years ago. Bobby Martin was doing the vocals.

I have seen Zappa many times and I remember that he did some "Whipping Floss"...However some music that I remember from my youth fell into things forgotten along with zillion other things....
While I am sure Allman Brothers Band will not do a thing for some readers here.... those guys could play...IMHO Zappa/Allman/Whipping/Montana/Floss LOL

I ain't making this up. In the Summer of 1971 I was working in a pizza place in Gatlinburg, TN (about a month before I joined the USMC) and at about 12:30 AM the Band showed up for pizza and beers. I served them, I also smoke a dubbie with the roadies. The Band had already crashed in the tour bus.
Other music trivia, which I have no claim to, other than I was there. I bought my first house from Danny Elfman, a now major music composer for movie scores and the founder of the band "Oingo Boingo", and Jeff Pilson, the bass player for Foreigner lives a few houses down from me. Somewhere I have an LP signed by the Oingo, Boingo band. Oh, and I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express more than once with absolutely no one of celebrity status who was staying there.

Believe it or not the first time I dropped acid was with two friends (John and Chris) in 1970 in Statesville (Love Valley), NC. We were going to a music festival and the Allman Bros. were there. John freaked out and we couldn't find him all night but Chris and I were having a great time. After the show, Chris and I were hanging in front of one the buildings there (looked like a wild west town- no cars allowed) and Barry Oakley came out and smoked a joint with us- we didn't even recognize him at first. We started talking about John and where he could be. Barry asked what he looked like and said follow me. John was eating breakfast at the head of the table with Greg and Duane, lots of girls and roadies etc. He was still high as a kite but was having a good time at this point. We sat down too. It was one heck of a night- turns out those guys were just regular freaks like us- we talked ***** until 6 or 7 in the morning and then went back to our tent and crashed. Janis Joplin was supposed to show as well but only Big Brother did.

Love the rich sound of the twin drum kits and lead guitars. Looking forward instead of back the spirit of that music is alive and well today if you know where to look.

Back in my younger days, my "holy trinity" of guitar was Hendrix, Allman, and Clapton with Beck and Walsh as the associated demigods.
