Oscars

I was switching back and forth but after Will Ferrell came out and did ?
Nothing seem to work.
I just thought man this is so lame I couldn't take any more of it.

I like Billy but he just didn't pull it off .

I watched it because I know a few people who were nominated including Gore Verbinski, the Director of the Best Animated Feature, "Rango". Gore directed the first three Pirates movies for us and is currently directing "The Lone Ranger". I also know John Frazier real well, he was nominated for special effects for the latest "Transformers" movie which we didn't produce. But yeah, I thought overall it was lame.

Hey at least in did not last 5 hours.

stomachmonkey 02-27-2012 12:20 PM

J Lo near nip slip was a hi lite.

What was up with the audio on the presenters mike.

Sounded like some weird compression problem. Like digitized clipping.

The Academy successfully overlooking some really good pertinent films and performances from this year as usual. Where was a nod for 'Shame', its lead Michael Fassbinder and Director Steve McQueen, no nod for Thomas Alfredson for the outstanding Tinker Tailor, Nothing for Charlize Theron for her part in 'Young Adult', nor for writer Diablo Cody. After Bob Richardson picked up his award the only other highlight was A Seperation wining Best Foreign film.
The whole thing was hopelessly out of touch as usual. I can't help/hope feeling that its building up to a repeat of the time when Hollywood thought people wanted western themed musicals but Hopper et al knew they wanted Easy Rider, Godfather, French Connection.

not sure but it was really annoying.

I thought Billy Crystal and most of the skits were funny, other than that, whatever...

Went to nice Oscar watching party.

pegasus9 02-27-2012 02:02 PM

They get more lame every year. Get a clue academy.

Yeah I've worked with some of those ego maniacs. Enough said.

NBA all star game was better with the exception of the musical acts..

jyl 02-27-2012 02:14 PM

Well, the Academy did resist the heavy lobbying to give an Oscar to George Clooney for his amiably forgettable performance in Descendants. And I liked seeing Woody Allen get a screenplay nod for Midnight In Paris. Weird that Hugo won so many categories, I didn't think the movie had much buzz? I didn't see many movies this year, so ended up in the basement, snoozing on the couch, woke up for the last couple awards.

One of my friends is member of the Academy so we go to his party each year, eat and drink a lot, everyone fills out a fascimile of the ballot and the person who most accurately predicts the actual results gets a prize. Woohoo, a new popcorn maker for us! It appears to be a lot of work to conscientiously vote the ballot - every year, he has a tall stack of screener DVDs to watch, I wouldn't do it.

On a side note, I did appreciate Christopher Plummer's speech. What a class act. They don't make stars like him anymore. The part about his wife deserving a nobel peace prize was brilliant.

Need to see the film he won for.

lonewolf 02-27-2012 02:32 PM

And what a wife ! Looks like the old guy has it it more ways than one.

I had never heard of it until last night.

For that matter, I never heard of Descendants, The Artist or the Glen-Close-in-drag-whatever-the-hell-that-was movie either.

I'm not going to feel the slightest bit guilty next year missing it.

Nice of Woody Allen to not be there.

Hugh R 02-27-2012 04:16 PM

I've gone to them twice (Disney/ABC produces). They are really long, you want to eat before you go. You'll end up sitting for five hours. I didn't get invited to any of the balls, so I probably won't go again.

Academy membership is definitely skewed which perhaps results in the films/persons awarded.

Movie academy: Oscar voters overwhelmingly white, male - latimes.com

Among the numbers cited, the median age of Oscar voters is 62.

Otherwise, Shia LaBeouf would have an Oscar for best actor (who revealed great emotional range in Transformers 3). :)

The arse-kissing and ball-washing that goes on each year in connection with these awards is epic.

And all the studios have big budgets for their "oscar campaigns".

It's hard to take the results too seriously.

But it's always a great spectacle and fun night for us.

Suggest paying more attention to the films and supporting talent honored and less so on the PR-conscious glamour and industry henchmen. It seems the red-carpet, kiss-kiss, preening extravaganza plays out longer than the actual awards program.

Woody has never been there.

pegasus9 02-28-2012 04:15 PM

Woody Allen was there in 2002 only to support NYC after the World Trade Center tragedies.
