Time to 'fess up...I went over to the Dark Side.

Some time ago, actually.

Cornering? Not so much. Brakes? Don't make me laugh. But it'll smoke the tires and chicks dig it.

Don't worry, I still have the P-car, but it's definitely playing second fiddle lately.

And no, I do not watch NASCAR...but I did hang out for a bit at the NHRA Nationals last weekend.

wdfifteen 02-29-2012 01:01 AM

Sweet! Great paint. I've often wondered if it was much trouble keeping that many carbs in synch.

ZOO 02-29-2012 01:20 AM

+1. Love it. I bet it sounds kick ass. You need to post a clip on youtube.

azasadny 02-29-2012 02:49 AM

Very nice!!!!!

Oh Haha 02-29-2012 02:51 AM

Suh-weet!!!!

+1 on some action video. A little tire smoke never hurt anyone. :)

How hard would it be to build a car like this that also corners and brakes well?

Looks fabulous.

johnco 02-29-2012 03:19 AM

nice! kits are available to easily swap over to disk brakes front and back. cornering? not so easy. what kind of cornering do you need to have in a car like this anyway?

Jim Richards 02-29-2012 04:03 AM

Outstanding! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif

GH85Carrera 02-29-2012 04:11 AM

80 year old cars don't need to corner much.

Cool toy. There are some nice guys that show up at the local meets and classic car shows.

It would not hurt to put some better brakes on it. Keep the old drums and parts in a box for the next owner in case he wants them. Brakes don't really cost the much and stopping is always a good thing.

fred cook 02-29-2012 04:49 AM

Lil Deuce Coupe...........

'32 Highboy with a chopped top, wide whites and a Buick nailhead! Looks great! I'd bet it is great fun for cruzin'. Love the Stromberg carbs. It may not handle or stop well, but I am sure that it makes all the right sounds!

krystar 02-29-2012 05:02 AM

and a exhaust dump cutout

this thread needs video w/ sound

kach22i 02-29-2012 05:11 AM

I trust you wear ear plugs when you use that by-pass pipe.

Nice ride, looks like fun.

Rot 911 02-29-2012 05:13 AM

I like most any car, but for some reason the hot rods have never done anything for me. Maybe because I don't want any car that I would feel silly being seen in. I am shallow that way. :D

Looks like a well built car though.

PorscheGAL 02-29-2012 05:22 AM

I think that is awesome. Great score.

VINMAN 02-29-2012 05:24 AM

AWESOME!! Always wanted to build a Grafitti clone myself.

DonDavis 02-29-2012 05:43 AM

Wanker. Very cool.

5String43 02-29-2012 06:12 AM

Too cool! Especially love the Nail-head - don't see a lot of those anymore, not in a Deuce 5-window, not anywhere else.

LeeH 02-29-2012 07:55 AM

Nice! Let me know when you take it to The Pavillions car show!

I have a hard on for most cars 'cept really riced out or monstertrucks

pwd72s 02-29-2012 08:03 AM

A Classic! TV Tommy Ivo would congratulate you on the engine choice. ;)

Zeke 02-29-2012 08:04 AM

Looks to me that you have the equipment there to have better brakes. I assume you don't have the hidden disc set up inside those finned drums. Are the shoes properly arced and fitted? Not many people do good drum brake work anymore.

If you like, you can ship the drums and shoes to a company here.

masraum 02-29-2012 08:09 AM

Very nice. I like tho look. I'm more of a 60's car kind of guy, but I like these old rods too. I especially like the cool color scheme. I've always liked that pale yellow.

skunked 02-29-2012 08:11 AM

sweet rod, love the checkered firewall.

scottmandue 02-29-2012 08:32 AM

Not the dark side... the very cool side.

Can't you install disk brakes on that bad boy?

EarlyPorsche 02-29-2012 08:37 AM

Is that a NAILHEAD peering under the hood? Nothing beats the sound of a NAILHEAD! Is that a metal body repro?

Not too difficult but done with real intent kills the looks...and looks matter in car like that.

speeder 02-29-2012 08:55 AM

I absolutely love it

If I had the money for a real car collection, a deuce coupe and maybe a roadster would be in my warehouse. Old school all the way for me, I don't like modernised rods. They are a part of SoCal car culture history.

Did anyone see the "Mad Men" episode where Don was in a flashback to his SoCal days and met the guys building hot rods in the early '50s? It was excellent.

On the way to an Oscar-viewing party Sun. night, I saw this on Sunset as traffic crawled along. These are a little too *billet/Foose* for my taste but you have to give them major points for the American Graffiti influence. Talked to the guy in the '55, he said that the weather was nice so they just decided to take them out for a cruise.

Those wheels/tires look silly.

You can still look vintage and have good suspension/brakes/tires, just look at the yellow car in speeder's post. Not period correct but still looks cool (IMHO).

pavulon 02-29-2012 10:02 AM

that's true and I understand what you're saying but I'd bet that yellow car and the OPs car handle and stop similarly. Roy Halladay's black one should be a different story...IFS, IRS, modern tires/brakes, low CG...all conspired to be a mutt of a car...also IMHO.

HardDrive 02-29-2012 10:19 AM

Great car. I want a hot rod some day.

BlueSkyJaunte 02-29-2012 02:01 PM

Thanks for the comments. I'd been jonesing for a '32 roadster for the better part of the last decade but this opportunity came up and I could not afford to let it get away. Especially since I had a small hand in the design phase of this build back in '05 or '06. Believe me, the base this was built on was nothing to write home about, other than being in relatively good condition.

Some specs:
Original '31 frame and shell (with well-hidden vintage rust damage to prove it)
1964 Buick 425ci Nailhead
6 Strombergs (only 2 are working...) into Weiand intakes
Turbo Hydramatic 350 slushbox
More details on request. :)

The brakes are, indeed, discs under those So-Cal Speed Shop finned covers. However, braking is all relative. This one brakes fine for what it is. But discs on a '31 Ford cannot compare to discs on an '81 911. :D

I haven't yet gotten up the courage to uncork those bypass pipes. The full exhaust is loud enough to annoy the neighbors as it is. I'll try to post up something to Youtube soon.

Lee, Don, and the rest of the AZ crew: let me know when you plan to next be at the Pavilions. I'll see what I can do to meet up with you. And I won't bring the dirty Porsche. ;) :D

Oh, and for the roadster fans (like myself): check this out. I've hung out with this fine gent a few times at a couple shows. He's my hero. He hand built this roadster from an all-steel repop kit from the ground up, built the Lincoln V-12 mill as well. The V-12 gives me goosebumps when he fires it up! It runs like a Swiss watch (no small accomplishment) and howls like a P-51. The entire car is powder coated flat black.

herr_oberst 02-29-2012 02:08 PM

Please don't feel the need to apologize for owning a hot rod, at least as far as I'm concerned.
A dream of mine is to someday own a chopped 33/34 3 window, Black, maybe even flamed, like the California Kid!

sammyg2 02-29-2012 04:18 PM

where's that really really want racoon when you need him?

944Larry 02-29-2012 04:33 PM

No problem here. The thread made me think you had got a Mustang!

Brew 66 02-29-2012 06:11 PM

The '32 ford with the Hot Rod Lincoln V-12 is owned and built by Frenchy Dehoux. He is a legend in the VW Circle's. In the '70's he built many Bug-In winning show cars and is still building a lot of cool cars. Check out these two links, the second is his most recent build.

The original "Hot Rod Lincoln" song...recorded by the guy who wrote it.

Hot Rod Lincoln - Charley Ryan (1st version) - YouTube

BlueSkyJaunte 02-29-2012 07:13 PM

Yes, I know it's Frenchy....just didn't want to "out" him without his permission. :)

DonDavis 02-29-2012 08:19 PM

Remember the Fuchs deep 6's Lee traded to me a few years ago? I sold them to Frenchy. He had just began work on the Shrine. I delivered the wheels to him and only got a quick glance of the '52. Cool guy.
