The most unsantirary part about eating in a restaurant is touching the menu. That's when you should be washing your hands. I always go to the men's room after I've ordered and the server has taken the menu away.

I've been behind the scenes in big hotels where the chefs and kitchen staff have come out of toilet cubicles and not washed their hands.

You have hit on my pet hate, marginally worse than dog crap.

I wonder how humankind survived 200 years ago without toilet paper, running water, sani-wipes.

Or for the ten thousand years before that...

This whole germaphobe thing popped up what... about 50 years ago?

How did our parents get by at the supermarket without disinfectant wipes for the shopping carts!!!! The horror!!!!

Scott,

So many years ago our guts were not as sanitary as they are now and we were better able to "digest" the bugs. Of course, there were some other wonderful diseases that ran amuck as well. Sort of why the population grew slowly for so many centuries...

Had a director of hr at a pharma where I worked. he never understood why people REFUSED to shake his hand or go through the lines behind him. Yep, NEVER washed his hands. AND he fired people for "unsanitary acts" and other such strange things in a pharmaceutical manufacting environment.

Well, in those days people did die of things you and I have probably had 10-20 times in our lives. And medical care in those days was often worse than the disease. You didn't have cities of several million people taking the subways to work, spending their days in closed office buildings, flying across the globe in less than a day and plenty of other modern marvels.

I've never gotten sick while traveling in other countries and I've done some stuff that would make folks puke if I posted photos. But I can kind of see how germs get around a lot faster and farther these days.

I'm not anti sanitation... but I'm not pro germaphobe either.

What about you guys that go camping or backpacking? How sanitary is that?

Ok I have to admit to dating a OCD germaphobe and it did mess me up a bit.

I haven't been camping since I was a kid. But at least that's not shaking hands and being in confined spaces with lot of strangers. I'm not OCD at all, but I tend to wash my hands a lot, to the extent that I can't stand to do so anymore by the time I go to bed and thus don't floss until I brush my teeth in the morning. I do brush every night too.

So, anyone care to explain how my penis, which is washed every morning then covered with clean cloth, is somehow less sanitary than the public restroom faucet that gas been touched by every tom dick and harry withgod knows what ailments. I make every effort to touch as little as possible in public restrooms and unless it is an absolute emergency I refuse to 'drop a nuke' in one.

In a band once, on tour, my guitarist stood up in the bus and announce he was going to "Wash my hands and take a leak." A lady friend said "You mean....take a leak and wash your hands?" His reply:

"Nope. I know where my (Johnson) has been."

Perhaps the doctors could shed some light on this discussion, which seems to have peoples panties in a wad. Let's say I get up in the morning, shower, and put on clean clothes. When I go stand at the urinal, is my Johnson putting bacteria on my hands, or is it the other way around?

I'd say other way around, if you had just cleaned and in fact put on clean undergarments and had not sat on anything or been sweating all day, etc......

The issue is the group of people around you who have touched everything and those coming out of the stalls who refuse to wash up. Do you want the doctor to wash their hands between patients or do you really care? Dentist? Hygenist?

The faucets are likely more germ ridden than the toilets. Don't get me started on the door knobs. However the stall doors and the flush handles will be filthy with stuff. And not everyone has a "clean" "modern" digestive system. There are still bugs floating around that we do not have much protection against.

From a manufacturing point of view you wish to keep EVERYTHING possible away from your product. This is why you have hand washing before getting on the line. Wearing gloves, something over your street clothes or changing into other clothes before entering manufacturing. And shoes....

Places I have worked (not all) go through alot so we do not intruduce microbes into something that is given to sick people.

Not every country or company cares. I've seen food processors with rat feces and urine falling into their cooking vats who could not have cared less. I've seen companies dump aged guano, dust, dirt, paint chips, who knows what into their production vats because cleaning the handling equipment or packaging would add costs and inconvenience. These are facilities in the US. It happens every day. Our guts are marvels of something other than science!

I travel a lot for work, domestic and international. When I get to my destination, hotel or home, I take a shower. They don't shampoo the seats in the planes, or at least hardly ever, and people on the planes comes from all over the World with different ideas of sanitation, or lack thereof.

On our shows, we have something called "Craft Services" which is the person who provides snacks between meals. They have gotten quite elaborate over the years. In the last few years they've gotten a lot better has things like requiring you to wear food handlers gloves when making a sandwich, no more community bowls of nuts and potato chips either.

I have always washed my hands and tried not to think about what other people do.
Why worry? You really don't want to know how much poo is around your house, work etc all of the time.
On Mythbusters they actually took swabs and had them tested... Poo everywhere. The toilet seat was one of the cleanest things they tested.

So you wouldn't mind if I put mine in your water glass? I mean, it's clean and all.
