Montreal, Quebec City and region?

My wife and I will be driving up the second week of September.

I have fished from Thousand Islands way up north into central Quebec, but I have only been to the east a couple of times. Last year we went fishing up at Manicouigan and I was quite impressed by Quebec city and the bay of St. Lawrence.

Any suggestions for hotels, restaurants, can't miss sights or activities?

Thanks guys!

See if you can attend a PCA event at Le Circuit Mont Tremblant.

I’m jealous. Perfect time of year to go there. Expect it to be a bit chilly. Bring some warm sweaters. Although you maybe lucky and get shorts weather. But prepare for both.
The driving will be amazing but I’d bring some good walking boots and explore some trails.
As for food... I’d avoid any chain type restaurants. Quebec City is Known for their food and with the exchange rate you can eat like a king. Try small local restaurants. Try order in French and don’t rush.

I exercise my high school French in Quebec every year. I'm usually able to struggle through.

Back in the seventies and eighties the Quebecois seemed to greatly resent Americans. They have been much more welcoming the last few decades.

No driving events - there won't even be any spirited driving on the roads. My wife is very motion sensitive - we will take her Buick. Trail explorations are definitely on our list. She very much likes walking in cities - we have plenty of rural walking at home.

Thanks Guys!

We did that trip a few years ago. Loved it and I look forward to going back.

In old Quebec: https://www.hvq.com

Reserve though them direct and you get breakfast hung on your door each morning. Perfect location.

Check out the little strip of restaurants on Rue Grande-Allee just outside the old city walls adjacent to Plains of Abraham.

We stayed at Hotel le Cantlie Suites in Montreal. Also a great place. Got a free upgrade there, room was very nice and spacious. Again a good location.

A must visit in Montreal is one of the markets. We went to Atwater market and highly recommend it.

We will stay 3 nights in Montreal, 3 nights in Quebec city, then decide our schedule for the rest of the trip.

We are planning to go up through Plattsburgh and come home through Ottawa (we want at least one night in Ottawa)

Hotel de Cantlie can't accommodate the nights we want - I'm looking at L'Hotel.

Thanks Guys!

You will not enjoy driving in downtown Montreal...so much construction, and very little parking. Leave your car at the hotel.

Everything else is good.

And no right turns on a red light on the island.

Fairmont Le Château Frontenac doesn't have a room for us either - so I am still deciding. I had thought that the second week of Sept. would be less busy.

We don't plan to drive when we don't absolutely need to. I'm pretty good in cites. Thanks for the heads up on "no right on red" .

LHotel Montreal downtown is what we are looking at right now.

Spent some time in Quebec City last year. The day we arrived there were 7 cruise ships in the harbor, and things were a mess. The next day when most of them cleared out it was quite pleasant. A beautiful town with a very European feel.

Caleche or cab over to Frontenac and have a Brandy at the bar............ worth the trip. the place is magnificent. do not forget to take the stairs to the river front and walk the retail district. like nothing you will ever see.

The link in my post for 'hvq' is where you want to be in Quebec City. Right down the hill from Frontenac. Could be full but if you can get in there it's a great place.

Montreal city is big enough there are plenty of great hotels I'm sure. Old Montreal is beautiful as well.

Porchdog -

Personal favorite restaurants in both cities:

Quebec City - "Le Continental", old school French cuisine, most of the specialties prepared table side. This is where I developed my palate for steak tartar! A visit there is memorable experience not just another meal at a restuarant. I have been going there for over 20 years. Anthony Bourdain did a segment of No Reservations there while visiting Quebec. I love this place.

Montreal - "Ristoranti Cavalli", great steak house and bar very cool atmosphere.

Both cities have many, many more fantastic restaurants but these are always my must go to places when I am there.

Safe travels

We will stay at the Hotel de Cantile in Montreal and the Maison Kent in Quebec City.

Apparently there's a bike race in downtown QC on the 13th - probably why rooms were hard to get.
Ristoranti Cavalli is apparently closed. I made a reservation at Le Continental.

Thanks Munchen! Nice to get advice form a neighbor.

Porchdog-
Sorry to hear about Cavalli's demise. St. Laurent Blvd & Crescent St in Montreal have quite a few restaurants & cafe's. It's party central in those areas during F1 week in Montreal.

I'm up along the Delaware river in the northern most part of Bucks County. I want to drive one of the air cooled cars up to Montreal in '20 for the F1 race. I've done it before and it would be cool to have a small caravan to make the drive.

Again, enjoy Quebec.

I just noticed where the F1 circuit is. Pretty cool.

Also, apparently it's Ok to drive on it. I may need to give my wife an opportunity to "deep dive" shopping while I try a lap or two with her Buick.

Spend at least one night in the Chateaux de frontenac, then get a pensionne across the street to save a little dough. I'd stay in the old town, it is simply beautiful.
