Braintrust... comp problem help
My one desktop keeps losing the internet connection after im idle a few mins. I have to uplug the lan cable and replug it back in like 3 times before i get it back.
Only happens on the one comp. |
Set a static ip address.
From Start hit run, type cmd When command line comes up type ipconfig Look for your current IP/Subnet/default gateway info Then go Start->Control Panel->Netwrok Connections->Local Area Connection double click In the list scroll down to Internet Protocol, highlight and hit properties. Check "Use the following IP address." Assign an IP address based on the one you got from ipconfig, example; if ipconfig gave you 192.168.1.3 use 192.168.1.30 as it's high enough to not conflict with any other dynamic addresses on your network. Subnet and default gateway will be same as derived from ipconfig. |
I thought the IP is automatically assigned by my router?

The only benefit of dynamic to you is you don't need to do any configuration. Dynamic is useful for WIFI devices like laptops/tablets/phones that are portable so they can attach to different networks quickly and efficiently. But sometimes there can be a setting that causes the lease to expire too soon. Since this is a wired desktop on a small network and has no real need to roam different networks setting a fixed IP makes sense. It's' quicker than trying to figure out why the lease is constantly expiring, if it in fact is. Could be a bad cable/network card. It will either fix the problem, or not, but it can help narrow down the possibilities. |
This is a long shot, but I've seen it cause a similar problem.
Start - right click Computer - Manage - Device Manager right click the network adapter Go to the Power Management tab Uncheck allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. See if it gets any better, if not, it's at least ruled out. |
Ok Thanks guys. I'll try those. Its driving me nuts
Help mucho appreciated!:) |
