*** 1960 Mercedes 190 SL for $10K Story ***

I was cautioned by many to keep my mouth shut till it was a done deal. Deal is done and it's now in my garage. Story:

About a month ago, my doc sends me to a specialist in a city about 1.5 hr away for some tests (All turned out good). Arrive, female doc in her early '50's.......Questions: So, what do you do for a living? Retired. What do you do with your time? Blah, Blah, Blah and in my spare time I tinker with old cars and motorcycles. End of story.

Exam starts, she sees my hands are a little dirty, sez: "I can see you do stay busy, what you doing now"? Getting an engine ready to go into an old Porsche 911.

She sez: Do you know anyone that works on old Mercedes? I have a 1960 190 SL and can't find anyone to work on it since my mech had a heart attack. If I can't find anyone to work on it, I'll just sell it? (Gears are starting to turn) I ask what it needs; she sez runs good, just a tune-up and some brake work....Hmmmm, how much would you want? She replies: $10,000.......She gives me her card and tells me to let her know if I can find someone to work on it. I say: "I'll try and get back to you"......

Not sure of the condition from the above info, but go home and check current asking prices. I'm very happy and send her a letter telling her I'm interested in buying it. A week passes and then I get an email with pictures taken in her driveway:

The email says she want's $10K and it's been sitting since last fall, not sure if it will start. I reply, be up next weekend, I it don't run, I'll have it towed home.

Continue to trade emails during the week. She says battery is bad, won't start and doesn't have time to get a battery. Said if it's not running when I come on Saturday, she is "flexible" on the price........I'm on pins and needles all week thinking she will change her mind:

So, I arrive at the appointed time yesterday (Sat). Car is just as described and it has the aftermarket hardtop on. She tells me she has had it 13 years, doesn't know the history except that the Solex Carbs have been replaced with Webers and she had them rejetted. Inspection shows:

A high quality restoration. Great paint, bumpers/grille re-chromed, new windshield, all new seals, new interior, etc.

I get it running in a few minutes jumping from another battery and a little starting fluid. Runs good, drives good, shifts good. Great oil pressure, she said compression was good last time checked. 61,300 miles is all.

After a 100 mile drive home, the only issues are: water temp gauage no worky, radio no worky, needs soft top replaced....That's it.....

No, it's not for sale, thanks for those that have sent me PM's.......Happy Fathers day; mine was a good one !

Holy Cow! That's a great story, but why doesn't it happen to me?

Well, you certainly stepped in with that deal!!

Have any pics of the hardtop? I'd be interested in seeing an aftermarket one.

That's a decent looking aftermarket hardtop, as opposed to some of the abortions of the period. Fiberglass, I assume?

That car has to be the deal of the year, if not the century. Hopefully the bottom looks as good as the top. Have fun with it, and yes, you definitely had a Happy Father's Day.!

As I said on another thread, that's a crazy deal. Check asking prices on those cars, it's probably worth 5x that much.

You stole that car!

The "guideline" price for a 190SL in "good condition" (according to the current German Motorklassik magazine) is 68,000 Euro or about 95,000 USD.
