Where to stay in Stuttgart and Paris?

Hey lads,

Going on a Euro-excursion in late April that will take us to Stuttgart and Paris among other places :D

Looking for suggestions on accommodations in both places... preferably something with some character, quiet, clean, private bath, that is relatively reasonably priced and well-located (I know, not much to ask right?)

So -- any suggestions/experiences?

Thanks!

d.

I've never been to Stuttgart but to Paris a few times. Le Marais by the river is the coolest neighborhood...in my humble opinion. Great walking, close to everything. People that know Paris would perhaps know better but that's been my favorite by far.

Rent an apartment, try VRBO or something along those lines.

To be smack in the middle of things in Paris, look in the areas that border the left bank of the Seine - the 5th Arr or the 6th are prime tourist havens with lots of choice for hotels or rentals. It is a walking city so close is good. I usually start looking around the Boul Saint Michel/Boul Saint-Germain & work out from there. Search on Fodor's Europe Travel Forum & Trip Advisor for suggestions but bear in mind that 80% of the recommendations on TA are suspect so only believe the reviews from multiple posters. Best Western has a large footprint with many nice smaller properties sprinkled all over.

In Paris, we have stayed here. Only a few blocks walk to the Eiffel Tower. The street is foot traffic only with a butcher, baker, wine, and cheese stores next to it. There is a metro station one block up and a bank if needed.

It's been almost twenty years, but our stay at the "Graf Zeppelin" in Stuttgart was wonderful. Close to the train station, and a quick drive to the Porsche and Mercedes factories and museums.

My wife and I go to Paris about once per year, but we pretty much never stay at the same hotel twice. The previous poster's advice to look around Boulevard St. Michel in the 6th is a good one. The St. Germaine des pres area (7th) is nice too. I have stayed twice at Hotel Andre Latin (in the 6th). Nothing fancy or charming, but it was clean and fairly cheap for Paris. A place both the wife and I liked was Hotel Lindbergh. More pricey, and small rooms (typical for Paris), but definitely more upscale than Andre Latin. Mercure is a French hotel chain that are usually good (but not particularly stylish) and they have many small hotels throughout the city.

We spent only one night in Stuttgart, at Hotel Unger. Very central location, and if memory serves (it was a few years ago now), they had parking for our rental car. The price was not on the cheap end of the scale, but I recall the place was nice and rooms were fairly spacious by European standards.
