Where to eat dinner in Decatur Alabama?
There is a business trip planned to visit Decatur Alabama. Where would you recommend to eat dinner? We are looking for local flavor, not a chain restaurant. Price per head ~ $50 - $75 each.

Billy Joe Jim Bobs.
Take CR45 south out of town 'bout 4 miles then a left at the big turn. Take a right just past the old Johnson farm, it burned down bout 4 years ago but you know where it was. Anyway, it's maybe 20-30 minutes east of there. Enjoy

Big Bob Gibson's on 6th Avenue (Highway 31).
Great BBQ and has won all kinds of awards. Pork plates, ribs, chicken with white sauce, BBQ stuffed potatoes. $50 of food here will most likely kill a person from sheer quantity. It's a small homestyle place with most entrees under $15. I like the stuffed potatoes (chicken with white sauce or pork with red). I do not eat there as often as I used to because it is calorie intensive. Barbecue, barbecue ribs, food recipe, barbecue accessories, chicken wing sauce For variety I'll add a more upscale place, Simp Mcghee's. It's a nice bistro kind of place in downtown Decatur with prices another $10-15 higher than Big Bob's and more seafood on the menu. http://www.simpmcghees.com/ Or C F Penn's Hamburgers for that old style down and dirty greasy burger we all love. They are a little hole in the wall that has been selling burgers in Decatur since 1925. Order one "All the Way" to get it with mustard and onions. Order them one a at time a the bar because they are not as tasty when they cool off. Greasy, but good. http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/168/968127/restaurant/Huntsville/C-F-Penn-Hamburgers-Decatur

Don't listen to anybody in Michigan about BBQ. I hear they put ketchup on theirs.

$50-75 a head in Decatur? I just can't imagine there being anyplace where you could spend that much money unless you're drinking. I don't think "local flavor" is expensive in AL. I've got this mental image (from years of living in the South) of the menu running $10-15 per entree with 1 or 2 items running almost $20. I could be wrong though.

Another Big Bob's vote.
I sometimes just order the stuffed potato. Is the size of a nerf football. Is like $4. The Greenbrier by the freeway is not as good as the Greenbrier just north of that one on Greenbrier Road. |

I just made it back home from a Decatur rocket facility tour and Big Bob Gibson was great. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender and the sauce was great. My favorite was the habanero sauce which had a hint of habanero flavor but unfortunately without the kick. It would have been a tad better if it burned a little more. The restaurant is a family place frequented by groups of sheriffs, firefighters and tons of families with children.
The only other gripe is the ribs sure would have went nicely with an ice cold beer but they don't serve there. I recommend anybody in the area to give Big Bob Gibson a try. Thanks for the recommendation. Speedy
