Is veal still getting bad press?

Cooking BIL dinner tomorrow. Braising shank. Considered veal but went with lamb shank for double the money. I don't eat veal very often. Ive never bought any from the meat market. Are harvesting methods still done behind closed doors?

they raise them locked up in a tiny igloo about the size of a dog house. can't have them buggers walking around and making that meat tough.

Yes and no. I used to love veal, but gave it up when I found out how they were treated. A few years ago, my mom had a dinner party and did not tell me that she had Osso Buco catered. I was not happy when I found out, she knew my preferences. I did look into veal after that and found out that you can get veal that has not been caged. You would have to ask the butcher where the meat comes from. A little extra work, but worth it if you don't agree with the treatment, but enjoy the meat.

Truthfully, I think nearly ALL meat production has some questionable methods.

Kinda tough to feed the masses in today's world.

We're having prawns, ribs, polishes and Ruebens this weekend... MEAT.

For your best meat find a farmer raising highlands or galloways. Tender and low fat beef the way it should be.

Veal calves all around here...all chained to a hut. Many raised by Amish in abysmal conditions (folks who know real Amish know that many live as if they are livestock themselves). Really sad to see. Not sure who is eating all of it...there are some backward people out there. I suspect most simply don't mind how critters are treated by people.

I've seen them being raised and it sickened me. Many are dairy bull calves which are basically otherwise useless so they neuter them and raise them in confinement and feed them milk only. I can hardly believe that farmers/ranchers can do that to a living animal.

Apparently you guys haven't been around cows. I have and they are 95% dumber than the dumbest dog or cat you have ever known. They don't realize if they are cooped up or running wild and free. Explain it to me if you know otherwise.

I worked on farms through high school. The only critter dumber than a cow is a chicken or turkey. And I eat steak about once ever 2 or 3 months. Veal maybe 2 times ever.

Please don't feel sorry for cows.

Even with your 'experience' I do disagree. Animals do feel things and have basic emotions...laugh all you want. They are sentient beings. I have 40 years in practice as a veterinarian and I do know...cow, turkey, dog....what ever. They know when they are miserable.

Same thing only a goose...or duck..I forget. Animal abuse...
I guess it's either now that I read part of that Wiki site. Disgusting...

Don't get me wrong...I'm not an over the top PETA type but I do have limits. Animals raised for food must be treated humanely.

Les Paul,

I am sorry you feel that way. From my experience, animals do have feelings! They know when you are mad at them, they can tell if it is cold outside. Our Dexters seek shelter under roof when it rains and when it gets cold. They RUN for the cover. My Highlands and the Galloways LOVE the snow and don't mind the rain. They will seek the shelter in hail and freezing rain/sleet.

Try and lock up my bull for any length of time! The cows and he will work together to move the pens and take out the wire so they can be together! They will sleep so they are all touching each other hot or cold. They take turns watching over the babies, the bull will even take turns babysitting while the cows run off to another area of the pasture.

I have seen some VERY ignorant people who refuse to believe animals have feelings and thoughts. They beat, starve, and push the animals into submission. Themselves, they are not really worthy of being called human. Somewhere in our Good Book there is a nice discussion about man being commanded to steward the earth and its animals. Of course, if you fail to believe you are responsible for your own future or lack thereof.

Actually, I believe a large portion of our population fails to understand that beef comes from living, breathing cows; bacon from pigs; drumsticks from birds; etc.... People can be a bit dense.

Of course, I like meat and I know where it comes from. I have butchered my own, though I do not like the process.

Industrial diet, distantly removed from the farm which is now an industrial operation that is impersonal.

Find a farm, get to know the farmer, buy your produce locally! Support a farmer, it will save you money and improve your diet! It will also help maintain a way of life and set of knowledge we will need in the coming years of this century.

Oh well, David, what can you say to a man like that?

Not much, really. I've seen people that fit the description that Les Paul gave. Please don't feel sorry for them.

I guess there is a farm term that applies here: hogwash.

Wait till the Population hit's 10 Bill.
Complaining about the history of your meal, and where it came from will be absolute nonsense.

The African despots will then give you an education and show you what is left to eat .
You like to pick up rocks and see what's under?

I'm cutting back on meat. So the meat I do eat can come from a great source. I didn't think to ask the butcher where his veal came from. Buying from a local farmer is expensive. I do get one hog a year from my neighbor. She treats them like pets. .....until the end.

Only on this forum have I ever been called ignorant. WTF ever. I could absolutely live without meat but I guess Texas cows are just dumber than all those clever smart cattle in other parts of the country.

The only job I was ever fired from was at 17 because my uncle who ironically became a vet was kicking a calf in the head because it refused to be loaded in a truck. I have empathy about the plight of critters but it is what it is.
