How hard is it to replace a transmission on a lawnmower?
I have a 2008 Troy bilt self propelled lawn mower. Was out mowing today and about half way through I felt a click in the transmission handle and lost power. Suddenly I had a push mower. So I finished up doing the lawn the old fashioned way.
My first thought was a worn belt. So I replaced that today, no change. So, I am thinking that the transmission itself went out. A "transmission assembly" for this mower is $50 online. Then it's a matter of getting the old one out and the new one in without screwing something up. I called my local shop and they said they can do it for $100 but it's a three week wait. Anyone tackle this before? |
I replaced the transmission on my Honda POS. It wasn't too hard. As long as you have a good tool set you'll be fine.

Just don't forget to realign the forviladic key on the clornic valve. Pretty straight forward.

I hate working on lawnmowers. I've lost more blood working on those damn things. |
Well, hit my first roadblock. I got the rear wheels off no problem. There there is a small metal gear that is connected to the transaxle which meshes with a gear in the wheel itself. This gear is held on with a screw with a star type slot. I happen to have a star screwdriver head which fits but the sum***** won't move!! It seems obvious to me that this gear has to come off for the transaxle to come out but I don't want to damage the thing by putting too much force on the screw if there is some other way to get the thing out of there. Of course there is nothing on Google about how to take this transmission out. The owners manual just says "take it to your local Troy Bilt service area". What do you think? Crank on the sucker or what?

Last Troybilt I bought was only $70.00 from Craigslist. The entire mower in great condition too...freshly sharpened and balanced blade....fresh oil and new air filter....and freshly rebuilt carb. Self-propelled too.
Deals like this can be had but you have to keep checking..... Good luck! |
