The Dump rant
 

I went to the dump today and its set up to re-cycle but they wouldn't take an old keypad, its plastic FCS, no its computer stuff, I had to take that to the computer dump, old paint to the old paint re-cyclers, trees and green waste to another place, tv's and appliences to the spot for them.
I'm all for Green but this is a waste of energy, going all over just to dump stuff off, I don't know what its like in your town but this is a pain and not effecient.
Can't there be 1 place for everything?

Yea, the regualar trash can. :)

And in most places, it's illegal to put computers and peripherals in the trash. That stuff is toxic.

I thought this thread was going to be about something completely different. Possibly containing some Adele.

Didn't they make a Thanksgiving movie about this??

Good on Vancouver BC. Beautiful city, and seemingly intelligent residents.

I'm surprised Vancouver doesn't have e-waste recycling. You could always ship it to NextStep here...

Let me join in the OP's rant. The thing that happens here a lot is you separate all the different kinds of waste stuff , store till there is enough to justify the trip to the dump, and your bins are full, then load up all the stuff and get to the dump to find that half of the containers are full to the brim. So there you are truck loaded with all the recyclable and nowhere to put them. So do I drive the 20 mins back home , unload then do it all over again at a later date. Or just throw it all into the already overloaded land fill.

The state and county both run adds encouraging folks to recycle to avoid unnecessary dumping and to get materials pack into the supply system. then they let this happen far too often.

Us old timers have to retrain ourselves to do all this separating only to find it was all for nothing. Gerrrr!

If you want to follow that logic, you would demand a central location where you could make all your purchases.

Most of us adjust to the new norm. When I was a kid, the dump was an old river channel behind the house. Of course at that time all that landed there were bottles and metal scraps. Everything else was burned in the stove.

I like to think we've made some progress.

That's the way we have it. Fill the truck with trees, cut branches, bottles and cans. You can handle it all within about a 100 foot radius and then get on your way back home.

We have the convicts do it here. Either put the stuff out by the road or take it to the dump. Convicts go thru it and separate. County gets big checks on the recycle end. It helps to keep our garbage prices down.
It hasn't been that long ago that they burned the landfill on a good dry day.

Our county has a one-stop disposal place. Yard waste, hazardous chemicals, paper, etc. It's the way to go. I expect someone will start a recycling pickup service one of these days to haul your stuff there for you. They don't have a place for electronics though. We just hauled a truckload of old CRTs and computers to Goodwill. They take any computer equipment.

Oklahoma City has a good logical system.

I can take all hazardous waste like motor oil, antifreeze, old paint cans, un-used pesticides and the like to a nice clean facility that is manned. I just pull into the building and they unload the stuff for free. All I have to do is show them my water bill.

As for newspaper, plastic, aluminum and the typical non toxic household recyclable stuff I have a city provided blue bin that I put on the curb in front of my house and it will be picked up every Monday. That is the same day as my regular trash pickup.

For large bulk waste like water heaters, tree limbs or old fences I can put that on the curb once every other month. If it is less than 6 cubic yards it is free. Well, OK it is just included in my water-sewage-trash bill. If it is over 6 cubic yards there is an additional fee.

Since I have an El Camino and a dumpster at work I usually just take the little bit of yard waste I have to work and not clutter up the front of my house. Most of my yard waste I have fits into one of the two big blue roll around trash cans the city provides.

If I have something I consider to be useable like an old toilet, lighting fixtures, old furniture and the like I just put that on the curb in front of my office in an industrial area. There is a large food processing plant just down the street. Anything I put out there next to the dumpster is gone in short order. That is the ultimate re-cycle, let someone else get some use out of it.

We tried curbside recycling years ago but the rules and restrictions were too difficult. I would have spent hours per week washing and sorting trash, not to mention removing labels from cans and bottles. It simply wasn't worth it and the city cancelled the program shortly after it started. I use the city's recycling center as much as possible (batteries, old oil and paint, cardboard, aluminum, vinyl, etc...)

I put things like this on CraigsList. Someone will take it from you for free and you do not even have to leave home!

But that means you have to deal with Craiglist folks coming to your house. Yuck.

Nah, you put it out front; first come, first served.

Besides, I'm a big CL'r. A 1%'r. I show up. Not all CLr's are flakes.
