Buying a car off Ebay
Hi,
I've never really even considered Ebay, but I see a car I'm interested in for sale. I've asked the seller all the questions I can think of and the Autocheck report looks reasonable, I'm just wondering what else to do to protect myself. Can you ask for an inspection to be contingent on final purchase (If I win the auction)? I have a buddy that can import it for me (It's his hobby) so getting it here is not a problem. I guess I could ask to have someone look at it locally (CA) if the seller agrees. What say you? Cheers Bob

Sure, bought my P car off flea bay. I was in NY, car was in FL. My brother lived local to the car and after I won the seller met him at Turbowerks who went thru the car and agreed the price was correct. Deal got done.
If there had been issues not disclosed I was off the hook. |

So do you have a recourse if it's not as described, or been in an accident AFTER you win?
How does the Ebay protection thing work?

Forget the e-Bay 'protection'. It's worthless.
Get the seller, in an eBay email to make the final sale contingent on a successful purchase inspection. DO NOT, as I did, ASSuME that the words 'clear title' mean anything either. Keep the option to walk away until you are satisfied it is as represented, including the title. Good luck. I have bought lots of vehicles, but the one 'bad' one more than flavored the entire string of good ones. |

Thanks that good stuff, I spoke to a friend who is a CA dealer and he is going to give the seller a call to see if he's legit, or if there are any read flags.
I will do the inspection thing for sure. Thanks, Bob

It is like buying anywhere else. Ask good questions, size up your seller, agree to a sale contingent on PPI, etc.
I have had my e39 sport for almost 7 years, that was my first eBay car. It wasn't exactly as represented but I stole it price wise. My latest ride, an '86 928 came from the bay. It was a private seller and the car has been fantastic. Also picked up a 928 parts car semi-locally that I found on eBay, though we closed "offline". My favorite thing is the search droid. I told eBay the exact 928 I wanted, and it found it for me. When you are looking for something relatively rare (and I have two semi rare cars that eBay found for me - 5-speed 928 S3 and 5-speed e39 BMW sport sedan), using eBay saved searches is a godsend. |
