Very cool! This will be an excellent project!

post pics as you go

when you get to the motor, maybe a vintage hotrod setup would be good - what they did 2-5 years after the manf. date

... or what they would have done if they had what we have today

Only took two years, but it's finally home.

Actually looks pretty good after washing off probably 7 years of dust. It has an oil change sticker in the window from 2007, which I suspect is about the last time it was really driven. The ignition switch is shot, but by jumping from the battery to the starter it actually fired right up and ran surprisingly well. No smoke, no funny noises. I can't run it for long as the carb leaks gas, but I'm cautiously optimistic that after a carb rebuild, replacing a leaking coolant pipe, and rebuilding the brakes I'll be able to get it back on the road.

That is going to be so much fun on late summer days.

I have become a certified rag top man.

Nice Mustang! I'd leave the stock wheelcovers on there with the whitewalls. 'Everyone' hot-rods these old stockers and they all wind up looking the same, like Mach I or Boss clones. DARE TO BE DIFFERENT! Leave it as-delivered or as close to that as possible.

Trust me, I have had two '67 Camaros and the early Camaros are the most abused and over-done of the pony cars with Mustangs right up there. Leave it original. Real car guys will appreciate it more if you restrain yourself from tarting it up like a Mach/Boss clone. Heads will turn when you roll in to a car show or cruise night with the stock setup. Fancy it up with Mach/Boss stuff and no one will notice.

Nice find.

Pardon the hijack, but here's my unmolested '67 RS/SS 396 Camaro. Never been hot-rodded or modified. Stock its entire life. I drive it and people who get it love it. The less educated ask where the "Rally" wheels and spoilers and "cowl hood" are. Even the underhood insulation pad is original, battery and radiator stains and air cleaner lid imprint intact since 1967. I had a guy walk up and see all that and in a kind of stunned way he turned to me and said, "Don't ever change anything." I chuckled and agreed not to. "No really, don't ever change or restore this car." That's the guys I prefer to impress. If it's future money you're eyeing then consider what usually pulls the dollars nowadays. Unresotred, "barn-find" cars that have not been molested by several clueless owners over the years.

Okay, back to that gorgeous '70 convertible.

Nickshu 07-17-2014 08:54 AM

Looks like a project! BTDT! My '64 Corvair started the same way....bought it as a clean original driver w/ 78K original miles, washed it up, fixed the leaky carb and leaky fuel tank, got it running OK, drove it for 3 months off/on....now it's a full frame-off rotisserie restoration. That's the problem w/ being a perfectionist. Slippery slope! Good luck!!

While I certainly don't have a sterling track record of vehicular fidelity, because of the family connection this car will not be sold. Ever. I'm fairly certain my wife would conduct the required intervention if I had a moment of weakness, I fully intend on passing this down to one of my kids someday. Or giving them shared custody, who knows.

That's all important to note, because everything I do with this car will be for me. Further, I could care less what trend is on the cover of Hot Rod magazine this month. As Paul observed, this will be a summer evening driver. Job #1 is to make it drivable. After I get it back to good stock form I'll just enjoy it for a bit, and assess how well today's reality matches up with my childhood memories. It will need a suspension refresh, and I suspect that I'll be interested in going with lower/stiffer springs, Bilsteins, sway bars, and chassis reinforcements to make it semi-handle. I may choose to do a few performance upgrades, bearing in mind that it's an automatic convertible and won't ever be a Porsche. The hubcaps - sorry but they gotta go. I've hated them since I was a kid, and tire selection with 14" wheels is horrendous. I'm going with a period look alloy no larger than 16". Most importantly, no wings, spoilers, stripes (much to my son's chagrin), etc. The colors won't change, and I don't plan on doing anything that can't be reversed in the future. So there's the grand plan, now all I need is lots of time and money.

Great looking cars. The Mustang convertible is a beauty!! I have '67 Mustang coupe that I'm working on myself but loved Camaro's since I had my automotive awakening in the early '70s and worked in a body shop through high school...so am prejudice when it comes to straight panels. Outstanding colors on this car but the last of the rear driver's quarter has an area that seems a little worrisome. Is this area a photography problem or is something going on there?

Good luck. I'm envious of your workspace.

Original paint that is showing its age. Car is a 10 to 15-footer, or about how far I was away when I took the picture. Door dings and other small blemishes can be found all around the car. (Car was OO's DD for 20 years in SoCal.) Original. Can't fake it.

pavulon 07-18-2014 07:58 AM

Yup. Nearly everything 47 years old is going to have some wrinkles. She looks great all the same! There should be a "my other car" thread as there are several owners on here with some really neat stuff that almost everyone would appreciate. Perhaps even more so if it were all in one thread.

FOUR BARREL HOLLY!!!!!!

I think the 70 stang is my all time favorite Mustang body, good luck with the build!

IT RUNS!!!!

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z...psc6knm1vw.jpg

That's me pulling it out of my shop, likely the first drive in five years. After a rebuilt carb and new ignition electrical switch it fired right up. It sounds like hell with a rusted out exhaust and it needs refreshed basically everywhere, but it drove good enough for me to take my kids for a drive. After getting warmed up I had it up to about 65 MPH, it still has decent punch at full throttle.

I'm jumping in with both feet, starting with replacing EVERYTHING in the braking system. Then it will be suspension, mechanical tune up, exhaust, fluids, every rubber hose, and wheels/tires. At that point I suspect it will be summer, and time for some top down driving. I'll probably enjoy it for the summer then tackle some of the cosmetic issues like a new top, door panels, and seat recover.

BTW, I decided on Vintage Wheel Works V48 in 16x8 that will wear modern performance rubber. Here they are on a '70 Boss 302.

C'mon man! Cragar SS's . Then you grow a mullet, drop the top and rock out to Whitesnake. You'll be a chick magnet! :D

Seriously though, nice car and those wheels are sweet.

herr_oberst 02-16-2015 05:08 PM

Good choice on the wheels, especially if you drop it like the Boss in the pic....

Keep us posted!

onewhippedpuppy 02-16-2015 05:44 PM

Suspension will be modified in the sport direction, exact components are TBD. I want to make it semi-handle without ruining it, so it's a delicate balance. I may just go coilover front and rear and call it good. This is a keeper, return on investment is not a consideration.

ckelly78z 02-16-2015 05:59 PM

I have been casually looking for a 1970 Mustang for years now. I still remember a buddy of mine who's Dad had a really beautiful teal 70 Boss 302 in the garage back in the early 80s.....I loved that car, and want one now.
