rant on Tip Jars

after the last few days of rant threads on student loans, education and etc., I thought we might have another rant thread on another aspect of daily life relating to young people...

The Tip Jar

so have at it...

Rick Lee 03-30-2012 11:07 AM

Doesn't really bother me. I just don't put anything in them unless I'm ordering a lot and the folks behind the counter have to go above and beyond for me. I'm about to head to a pizza place for lunch, where I'd normally pay with a credit card. But I don't like striking through the tip line on the receipt I have to sign before they give me food and service. They do bring your food out after you order, so I wouldn't mind leaving something in the tip jar afterwards, but never before.

I asked the tellers at the bank why they don't have a tip jar.

If the baristas at Starbucks can have one, why not them?

The tellers liked the idea, but tell me upper management kinda frowns on that sort of thing.

The only people deserving of a tip jar are bartenders, and that's only if I'm not writing a tip into my check. Do something requiring a little skill and effort and I'll give you a tip. Pouring me a cup of coffee does not qualify.

This topic infuriates me. So much so that I put a tip jar on my cubicle at work :)

If yer not serving, mixing, or blowing, yer not getting a tip..period.

Pouring coffee does not count. Handing me a donut from the case does not count. And for petes sake, tossing the newspaper at the foot of my driveway does not count.

I once put a "tip jar" on the mixer board when running the sound system for a new band. Told one band member the more in tips, the better they will sound.

Fun to watch the puzzled look on his face trying to figure out if I was serious.

How about making a nice chocolate laden latte with orange mist on top?

Damn, you boys are cheap. Everybody has to make a living. Every one of us will run out of time before we run out of money. Spread some happiness while you can.

I usually throw in a buck.

There is a drive up coffee shop in front of my building. When you try to complete your purchase, there is a big tip jar almost blocking you. Do you really need to tip someone when their job is basically pivoting from a coffee pot and handing you a cup?

Is it just me, or does it seem odd to be complaining about tip jars on a Porsche forum? They probably need the buck far more than you.

Good post, Doc! I like to spread a little happiness as well. It seems to be a win-win situation at the places I frequent.

Talk about perpetuating the stereotype - what a bunch of pricks. Sounds like most of you wouldn't tip for anything less than a blowjob, and even then, only if she swallows.

Rick Lee 03-30-2012 07:46 PM

I never tip less than 20% at a restaurant. I don't understand how not tipping at places with no servers and whose employees make well above servers' base pay means I'm a cheapskate.

Always keeping things in perspective, you are.

But - I have three Porsches to support! I'm thinking of putting a tip jar next to my car at the next DE.

For me, it's a good way to get rid of coin change..lightens the load.
