side impact protection on old car?
I have a 1966 Alfa Giulia Sprint GT, which my soon to be driving son has an interest (he has no interest in Porsches - too conspicuous for his tastes). I am concerned about the safety of this car in general, but mostly about side impact protection, which would be about nil in any car made in 1966. Considering installing some kind of side protection, but I don't want a full cage because I think its a bad idea to have anything near your head unless you have a helmet on (not looking for a debate on this topic).
Wondering if anyone has considered the same issue. I am thinking of some sort of a harness bar behind the seats with a bar or two between the seat and door tied to the harness bar (kind of a low hoop), and then brace it in front of the seats, just under the front of the seat, tied into the floor at at least four points. My thought with the side bar is that it would be below the hip, because I don't want it to impact the driver in an accident. Anyone done this have any thoughts on this?

id leave the alfa alone. 10 years ago, i was in high school, driving a '62 TR4. after putting that car together, i knew that if i was in an accident, i would most likely be killed. that was enough for me to be extra, extra, extra mindful when driving.

make sure he invests lots of bloody knuckles, sweat, and lost nights with friends working on the alfa if he's going to drive it. it'll instill a sense of pride/ownership that he won't get by just "getting to drive it."

I would wait at least a year before turning him loose with the alpha. Get an older suburban for a few thou for the first year. Lots of metal, lots of air bags and he will walk away most of the time. Have the same issue here but with a daughter.
Her grandmother bought a new Mercedes and gave my daughter her older one (E320) nothing wrong with the car. The E320 is a nice car with lots of airbags etc, except it way to fast for a 16 year old beginner. The only I have going for me is that my daughter thinks the E320 is a old lady car. Oh, and she isn't going to drive my 75 911 (porsche content). I may teach her how to drive a stick on a old 74 BMW 2800 cs. I do understand about the alpha and the wow factor. Everywhere he goes people will look at it and ask "what kind of car is that". good luck
