Cross Country Road Trip (In December)
Driving my 1980 911SC cross country in December with my wife as my navigator, looking for any recommendations for places to see along the way...
The itinerary is as follows: Day 1: Charleston, SC to Deal's Gap, NC to Nashville, TN Day 2: Nashville to St Louis, MO to Kansas City, MO Day 3: Kansas City to Breckenridge, CO Day 4: Breckenridge to West Wendover, NV Day 5: West Wendover to Beale AFB, CA Day 6: Beale AFB to San Francisco, CA to Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA Day 7: Carmel to San Diego, CA The weather may be iffy but we will be packing in layers and avoiding snow to the south if necessary. I'll have my emergency set of tools, car parts, fuses, and a quart of oil. AND I'll be hitting the 250,000mile mark on the car around Colorado somewhere. I'll be sure to put up pictures once we start our trip!

I can't see Breckenridge as being very likely to be accessible in an SC in December, so I'd start planning that detour now...
If you can't get through the mountains of Colorado, which is pretty likely, there's nothing much to see west of St. Louis. Certainly Kansas sucks, as does the non-mountainous part of Colorado, and parts west. I've made several trips out west and the scenery in most of the interior west isn't fabulous. I'd consider a southern route. Places like Savannah, New Orleans, etc. are nice that time of year. Birmingham has a hell of a car/motocycle museum. JR |

i second the southern route, supposedly there will be a big El Nino effect this winter.

Route aside, those are going to be some long driving days. Won't allow for much sight seeing.

I am a big fan of Logan Turnpike Mill's grits and other products. When you're around Deal's Gap, it's a short distance away in Blairsville, GA. I passed it on my way there from Atlanta.
Nashville has Arnold's Meat & 3 for food, and the Lane Museum if you have time to stop and look at cars. I'm not sure you're going to get through CO on anything other than I-70 at that time of year. But you won't really have a good idea of what the weather is likely to be until the week before you leave. Could be perfectly OK, could be terrible. |

Carmel to San Diego in one day will be dicey if you're taking Hwy 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) due to construction and weather that time of year. Godzilla El Nino (if it happens) could make it worse. Ventura to LA to SD traffic will be PITA. Like Rot 911 said, not much time for sightseeing.
However, HWY 1 views spectacular from Carmel south. Big Sur, Elephant Seals at San Simon, Hearst Castle, Morro Bay just a few sights on that stretch. Ventana Inn or Ragged Point Inn on Hwy One for food. |

If you're going through CO that time of year, look into windshield breakage insurance from the salt and gravel on the roads. It can pound your car for miles. You might also consider a front and hood bra.
Bring the spare tire, jack and compressor if you have it. Lots of miles with NO cell service. |
