Try the honey wheat bread at Subway if you haven't yet... it really makes a difference.

porsche4life 04-03-2012 09:51 PM

Honey wheat or Italian herb and cheese are my go to, depending on what I am getting....

Zeke, you are going to the wrong Togo's.

Yellow Submarine near UCSF or this place around the corner from Sears(the coffee shop not the department store) Pt of mine owned it, best Jewish soul food I ever have had.

Togo's makes a darn good Reuben sandwich, although I dont think they have rye bread (maybe the do?). They're all far from me though.

Subway for me.

I really like their chocalate chip cookies too.

No Subway

Used to eat Subway once a week or so. Last time was about 4 years ago, BMT foot long. About 3-4 hours later it was coming out of both ends with a vengeance. Sat on toilet while holding trash can to vomit in, then lay on bathroom floor for twenty minutes or so and then start again. After round 7 or 8 I slept for about 5 hours until wife found me on bathroom floor in the morning. Did not eat for a few days. Lost some weight. Sat on the sofa for the next few days watching the Tour de France, sort of laughing every time I saw the Team Liquidgas jersey.
I remember there cookies, they were good. Sometimes I am tempted to go back for some of those cookies but am not ready yet.
What does not kill you makes you stronger, maybe, I really don't know.

I can fix my own sandwich - rarely do I buy one - usually only when on the road and running out of my own.

Subway and Quiznos are pretty much the same. What I find ridiculous is the choices of bread. Proudly do they ask which one you'd like ... they all taste the same! And the price is insane too, IMHO. If you take your family, you'll spend $25 on sandwiches! Something you could easily have fixed for about $5 yourself.

Believe it or not there are somewhere around 800 Firehouse Subs stores.

89911 04-04-2012 04:46 AM

I would say neither unless there is nothing around. I ate at Quiznos once. Got a steak sub that had so much A1 sauce on it I couldn't tell what I was eating. The problem I have with Subway is that there just isn't much taste. I usually eat there if I'm off the hightway and its that or McDonalds. It comes from having the meat sliced a few weeks ago and having it shipped to the franchises that way. There is a chain here called "Jersey Mikes". That is way better. Everything you order, they slice for you right there. Makes all the difference. Hopefully there is something like that around for you.

I prefer Jimmy John's. They are freaky fast like the slogan says. The roast beef sandwich is just amazing.

I hate the long slow moving line at Subway & Quiznos.

For a great hot Philly style sub Jersey Mikes is hard to beat.

wdfifteen 04-04-2012 04:56 AM

I end up at Subways a lot when I'm on the road because they're everywhere and the quality is more or less the same everywhere. If I have time I try the local mom and pop restaurants, but that's a crap shoot. Even "the best in town!" can serve deep fried cardboard that they bought off of a truck and call it "home cooked." I've found some really good mom and pops where everything really is home made, and some really disappointing ones that deep fry the same breaded, prepared, mystery substances that you find in the supermarket freezer.

subway is my preference but i have seen jersey mikes around so i'll try that.

exc911ence 04-04-2012 05:34 AM

Of the two, Quiznos makes a better tasting sub. Niether can hold a candle to Canada's own Mr.Sub though.

I liken them to burger joints. Subway is McDonalds. Nothing spectacular, but generally consistent, and all over the place. Quiznos is more like Wendy's, a little better, not as many around and the prices are higher.

When they first got to my area, Quiznos were few and far between, and I ate at them when I could because they were good, and new for me. It was sort of an infrequent treat, so I didn't mind dropping $10 for a sandwich, a bag of chips and a coke.

Once they opened more of them, and they became readily available, not so much.

Someone mentioned Togo's, of the three, I like Togo's best. They seem to consistently have the freshest ingredients of the three, and are as good or better than Quiznos and about the same price as Subway.

There is a Port of Subs nearby, but I haven't eaten there.

scottmandue 04-04-2012 06:58 AM

I have both walking distance from my work... honestly can't tell the difference.

It is a fast cheap fresh lunch.

You guys know that Quisnos has $5 foot longs too right?

I prefer TOGO over both of them... but have to drive to one if I want lunch there.

vash 04-04-2012 07:56 AM

subway. by a long shot. i find quiznos much too salty. and saucy.

craigster59 04-04-2012 08:01 AM

I prefer Jersey Mikes and then Subway followed by Quiznos. Philly's Best makes good cheesesteaks. If you are in the North Hollywood area, these guys make great sandwiches and wraps with a Mediterranean twist......

I miss Schlotzki's!!!!! Better food, decent value!

onewhippedpuppy 04-04-2012 08:29 AM

Around here we have:

Schlotzski's
Planet Sub
Jimmy Johns
Mr Goodcents
Bunch of local joints

All better than either Subway or Quiznos.

Tons of Subways around here, same in Japan, go figure, never too fond of Quiznos. Like the rest though, prefer Firehouse over the other two.
