Win 94 project

I really should start up some picture threads of my projects this semester. For this one, I am putting a 2-piece stock on a Winchester 94 AE Black Shadow. I think lever actions just need to have a wood stock to look right!

Short distraction. Needed a wood mallet and did not want to pay the $40 for one. Bought a piece of maple and made my own:

Thanks for the comments. I really lucked out on the wood. Got it for $70 from a former student. It looks better and certainly has straighter grain than most of the stock blanks in the class. Did some more work today, will get the pictures up tomorrow. Also decided to bring it home and try and finish the inletting this weekend. If I do, I can start shaping next Wednesday!

Did that once. Only my rifle is a Winchester Low Wall in .22 r/f chambering. Considering that I had never tried stocking a rifle, I thought it came out "ok".
I don't know what your instructors are teaching, but I used candle smoke and crayons to mark the high spots. I learned (quickly) that it is important to consider each cut of the wood and what impact it would have on the project. Think twice and cut once! When you get done, you will have something that you will treasure forever. So far, your work looks great!

Nice work Fred, also very good advice. I too use the candle soot way of checking my work. Now THAT is old school. Those old timers had the right stuff for sure. The schnable (sp) fore end on yours is pretty damn cool.

Thanks for the kind words. I left the forend slightly wider and flat on the bottom so the rifle could be fire offhand with the forend resting on the palm (metallic silouette style). The schnable was an effort to keep the forend from looking too heavy and blocky. I think it at least partly succeeded! That little project took me months and months to do. If I had done it for a fee, I would have made about a nickel an hour!

I know all about the nickel an hour LOL. Schnable ends are hard to do without them ending up looking like a dick. Yours looks great, (the schnable not yer dick).

Fred, that looks good. The key is patience. Luckily I have that!

I use Jerrow's Inletting Black (can get it in gold as well). Works well, easier to apply than candle soot. Not so much fun when the night class student does not clean the work bench when he finishes at the end of his day. (But that is another story)
