My latest Parkerizing project...
 

Our bass player at church has a Remington 870 that had seen better days and I offered to Parkerize it for him. All he had to pay was $50 for the sandblaster and I used aluminum gutter, cut to length and I caulked the end caps on it. It worked very well. The barrel turned out almost black and the receiver is a gray color, which I expected. The barrel must be made from a different steel, because the parts were all prepped, Parkerized and finished exactly the same way and all parts were put in the tank together.

Sorry for the crappy pics, but these were taken with my iPhone, the Canon camera takes much better pics, but the "auto resize" feature on the forum doesn't work any more, so I can't post pics from that camera.

No "before" pics, these are all "after"... The "blotchiness" is the grease that is on the parts that were Parkerized... The finish is nice and even...

The "Zasadny Parkerizing lab" aka, the garage...

You can see that the barrel is much darker than the receiver. The ring attached to the barrel is also a gray color, but the barrel itself is almost black. I had rubber stoppers in both ends of the barrel and the parts were sandblasted with 70grit aluminum oxide.

I told my buddy that if he doesn't like the "two tone" look, he can Duracoat or Ceracoat the parts that were Parkerized and get them to any color he wants. I did my best to make the gun look good, but I don't think he was impressed. If it was my shotgun, I'd take the accessories off of it and be happy as it looks much much better than it did when I got it... It was rusty but not too badly pitted, just surface rust that the sandblaster removed.

That looks pretty miserable to shoot Art. Have you had a go with it? I am looking to refinish my 870 with Duracoat (OD Green) as the receiver is pretty scratched up from a UTG rail that was previously mounted. Any perspective on DC vs. Parkerizing? I can do the DC myself for ~ $60 but would need to outsource Parker at ~ $200 for the full treatment.

I can't see much! But what I do see looks great. I wonder how the factor got the parkerizing on the factory guns all the same if the steel is different?

You can re-size images with a photo program. Even MS paint now.

What do you do to keep the parkerizing out of the barrel and smooth action bearing surfaces?

Guys, thanks! I'll Parkerize guns any time, it's fun! No fimes, so no mask and I do this in my garage with all doors open.

From my research, you want to apply Duracoat over Parkerizing, that's what the experts recommend. The shotgun was originally blued.

I didn't shoot that crazy thing! I can Parkerize your 870 for you. Only pay shipping and the $50 to sandblast. You can then apply Duracoat over the Parkerizing for the look you want.

The trigger group bolt holds on the "extra ammo" carrier-type thing... The gun is really not my style, I would have made it took like a WWII trench gun with a full barrel shroud and a 1917 bayonet, like my friend's Stevens 520-30 from WWII.

Yes of course you are right, I have seen those.

Of course, shipping any firearms would have to be done through a FFL on each end so everything is legal and copacetic!! I use my C&R FFL for guns that qualify and I need to remember exactly how to do this with newer guns that aren't covered by my FFL.

It's tricky Art. They would actually have to change owners for the term of the repair. So owners FFL to your FFL, transfer to you, you repair, you send to previous owners FFL, transfer back to them. PITA I know but that IS the protocol. Gunsmiths are required to have a "type" 1 FFL. Your C&R is a "type" 3 FFL. We are a "class" 3 SOT so you could send me a MIG 19 if you like. "Technically" If you do bluing and restocking you are considered a manufacturer, and need a "class" 2 SOT license to reflect that. There is a difference between a "class" and a "type" license.

Good to know, David. I guess I'll have to stick to screwing up my own stuff! Beth and I just spent an hour or so listening to and watching the Wrecking Crew videos on YouTube, those were fantastic! Our son will really be interested in those as he's very interested in audio engineering and studio work as well as his band. Thanks for everything!!
