color staining mild steel

This is purely for aesthetics but I have an old scotty cameron putter head that I've stripped the zinc from and now I want to do something unique with the finish. I thought there were some simple heat treating methods (quenching in oils and salts or similar) that would create some pretty cool blues and rainbow effect.

I've seen some cool stuff on gun sites where they do old school color case hardening with oddball chemicals, but I want to do something where I can get the supplies local. This is just for messing around, don't care if I mess it up.

Thanks guys.

How about Parkerizing it? A nice light gray might look nice. I could even do it for you!

Metal Finishes Plus - Metal Finishing Supplies - Tools & Shop Supplies.

I bought the copper plating solution to dress up my rat rod a bit but it's cheaper to make the solution yourself. I've got another link to the formulas for different finishes

if you go thru that website, you can see instructional videos and different processes. I have other informative links but this one is pretty good. I just copper plated my air breather. might do my dashboard, steering wheel and tailgate after I have them blasted. it has to be CLEAN steel. you can dip it, spray it or paint it on with a brush

go to the knowledge base and check the patina sections. at the first site, you can buy the premixed solutions for copper, rainbow, gunmetal, etc. a pint would be more than you need and it's pretty cheap. here's another place. go to page 68-69

You can always go cheap and use one of the spray-n-bake (or no bake...) finishes like duracoat, cerakote, guncoat, etc

Can't get the link to work, but I'm wondering if these are all for copper or steel.

thats from the first link I posted 2nd page.. it can be used on copper, brass or alloys. you could copper plate the steel first and then apply the patina. you can make copper plate solution with ionized water, cupric sulphate and nitric acid. you can get the cupric sulphate from root killers like rootX. or you can copper plate and let it weather. it's all in the kb formulas page. you can buy 8oz of solution for $10 though

I'll send you a bottle with enough solution to copper plate the club and then you could do the blue/ blue green/turquoise patina. sounds like a lot of work but it might take 5 minutes

That's very generous, let me play with some ideas and I'll get back to you. Thanks again!
