At a prior job I had one similar in size and age opened by a pro. He drilled it on the side - maybe a 3/8ths hold - and was able to get it open that way. Then we just welded up the hole - though it really wasn't necessary.

slakjaw 04-11-2012 02:03 PM

U mean u don't have the combo?

azasadny 04-11-2012 02:16 PM

I took a similar locked safe to a local locksmith (who has since retired) and he charged me a very reasonable amount to open the safe...

kimlangley7 04-11-2012 02:19 PM

I guess a 40# shape charge is not an option.... I'd make some calls to old-school locksmiths..

daepp 04-11-2012 02:19 PM

Come to think of it, the guy we used claimed he almost opened it with a listening device.

Neibour was a locksmith. He used to drill them and then use bodyfiller to patch the holes. :)

???????

I think if you have the time, Byron, that you could Google the technique and give it a go. I'd try for at least a day.

Hugh R 04-11-2012 03:28 PM

Looks like the Diebold in my garage based on the dial and age. PM me your email and I'll take a picture of the "tumblers" inside, that might help.

Zeke 04-11-2012 03:34 PM

Let's start a lottery on the numbers.

Closest to the actual numbers gets a Byron gift.

10-33-27 and 4 if it's a 4 no. combo.

Jim Bremner 04-11-2012 03:41 PM

couple of ways best is if it can be picked. 2nd drilled by a locksmith who knows where to drill and install a scope. After he'll jb weld a steel bb in the hole. 3rd is to cut a large hole in the back remove the lock from the rear of the door and weld up the hole once done. If you don't care about the safe I could get in many other ways.

Thanks Hugh, and the rest of you guys, I plan on working on it myself 1st.

MBAtarga 04-11-2012 07:23 PM

okay - since no one else has yet, I'll suggest this as the combination:

8 - 6 - 7 - 5 - 3 - 0 - 9

Jim Bremner 04-11-2012 07:40 PM

It should be a 4 combo dial if I 'member right it's to the left first than to the right 3 turns than to left 2 turns right one turn and back to the last # The dial pack slips on to a splined sprue. you can modify all #'s but the last one. If you own a borescope I can tell you where my door has been drilled.

Byron,

This is a really good talk - even entertaining:

How to crack the lock on a safe without destroying it or leaving a trace | Video « Wonder How To

A locksmith with a robo-dialer or a good guy that can just listen to it, will be your best option. I doubt you'll get it open yourself. I would advise very much against drilling it. That just will destroy the value of the safe.

Harvey,

We give you permission just this once to give it a shot! :)

I have one about like that but its an old US Army safe. If its very quiet you can hear things moving around in the lock assy, but hope that I never have to get it open without the combination! :)

Am I the only one who thinks that looks like an old fireproof safe?

This can be restated

Am I the only one who wonders if this is filled with asbestos or sheetrock?

I'd cut a hole in the back of the safe, and then remove the cover plate and align the gates and fence to open it up. I got my 7' tall Diebold safe from an old building in Vernon, CA that a client was going to demolish. It was locked open, and it took me about five minutes to turn the dial, look at the gates (notches) and figure out the combination.
