Removing old door knobs....HELP!x3

So, These pesky door knobs need to come off to refinish the doors. How? just HOW to get them OFF! I've googled, youtubed and got the spring inside to release but that has only let me spin the inner plate.

Please help!

Don't you need the knob off first?

Jim Bremner 04-15-2012 08:04 PM

tried!

Push in on that metal slot with a flat head screw driver, and pull on the knob at the same time.

I take it there are no screws on one side or the other...

That said, you may need to push in the knob as mentioned, then press in with a small flat tip screwdriver in the slot, then pull the knob off.

Any more pix that are clear?

+1

And if that doesn't work, poke a spikey thing like a small nail held by pliers in there.

Jim,

Is it a Schlage? Some of those require you to turn the part (the whole thing) where the release hole is and the whole knob will come out. Turn and pull on the knob at the same time. YOu have to pull on the inside knob usually. YOu turn it and might have to poke the release with with a screwdriver. Try that. I am sure you already poked on it and it did nothing, then you must turn it. it will turn. YOu might have to get through years of grime.

Hammer and screwdriver..........

Tap out the hinge pins and throw the door away. Go to Home Depot and buy a new door and hardware. Problem solved.

Just paint/stain/varnish right over it. That's the real dope shizzle!

That's it exactly. And, yes, that's a Schlage or one of their off brands.

The 1963 doors are much nicer than what I could buy at Home depot.

Harddrive and Zeke thank you.
