Why do I look thinner, younger and have more hair in the mirror....

than in pictures? I have heard that the camera adds 10 lb but does it take away years and hair too? Seriously, this is why I hate having my photo taken.

Put your glasses back on.

No, I think you're right about at least part of this.

One reason you look different is the image you see of yourself is a "mirror image" it is the reverse of what everyone else sees. It is like hearing recording of your voice. You don't sound the way you think you sound, and you don't look like you think you do. That is not an opinion, it is fact.

I look older, fatter, and uglier when I look in the mirror. :(

ronster 04-17-2012 12:48 PM

You see yourself in the mirror the way you want to see yourself, you see yourself in pictures the way the camera sees you. There is a difference and it's not the camera's fault.

Another thing is lots of pics show more of you than the mirror does. I mean unless you stand several feet from a full length mirror, there is no comparison. The camera does not see the finer hair, just the thicker mass which can lead to more of a receded hair line than is seen up close. Lighting is a big thing.

OTOH, the nose and ear hair gets a bye.

Cantdrv55 I hear you loud and clear on that topic! The camera flash will add years because it brings out and actually highlights "all the wrinkles and *****" that you may not see in the mirror! Compare yourself with a photo taken indoors with flash and one outdoors with no flash......you'll look and feel 9/19/29/39/49/59 again!...you choose!

I think I look like Johnny Depp. Then I look in the mirror, and a bearded Ron Jeremy is looking back at me, but without the giant cock.

mikeesik 04-17-2012 04:43 PM

Funny.

I'm not a photography expert, but it has a lot to do with the focal length of the lens. Also, if you think about it, you are maybe five feet from the mirror so and effective distance of 10 feet, where as a camera you might be a lot closer.

Why are the Holywood set so thin? Have you ever met a "star" in real life?

Photography is 2D were as mirrors are 3D... And that's about it.

Both are distorting but with a mirror you actually seeing in 3D so you look thinner because your eyes are seeing in a more "normal" way.

island911 04-17-2012 05:20 PM

Spot on Peter.

Oh, and lighting... flashes will light up a scalp better than indirect light.

Most are thin, and yes, because of the camera. Yes, lots of them, pretty much everyday in fact.

On camera she's doesn't look super thin but in real life she is. ;)
