Estoy trabajando gratis todo el día.
I am on call at the hospital today. No pay, we just take turns in case there are emergencies.
It's a beautiful day. 80 degrees and I was hoping to go for a ride on my motorcycle or go swimming with my daughter. But wait.... The phone rings. It's the emergency room. Leticia is 24 years old and pregnant. Despite the fact that she is an "undocumented" immigrant to our fair state, she has comprehensive health insurance through MediCal. She has received very good prenatal care at the county facility. She is supposed to deliver her baby there. But Leticia has a different idea... The posh suburban hospital where I work is just a little nicer that the county hospital, so when Leticia's labor begins, she call 911 and gets a ride to our hospital. She knows we cannot refuse her. And despite the fact that she is in very early labor, she refuses to be transferred to the county hospital. She likes us! I reviewed her records and this is the 4th time she has used a 911 ambulance to come visit us. So I'm spending all day and likely into the wee hours at the hospital with Leticia. For free. I am not a registered MediCaid doctor, so I will not be paid. And it is against the law for me to bill the patient directly. She is now resting comfortably thanks to her free epidural and the view from her free private hospital room is glorious! I love charity and I give away a fair amount of my time. But this feels different. Like the difference between handing the homeless guy a few dollars and having him pick your pocket. There is no joy in this. And the kicker? If anything goes wrong, and I mean ANYTHING, suing me is like hitting the Lotto.

Because they'll laugh at him and hang up the phone. Heck, they might even call someone at the hospital to check on Moses' mental state... maybe open an inquiry.

I imagine they have a great community BBS they visit where they talk about barn finds , dying pets, driving w/o insurance, and technical problems on ****king the state.

If you did call someone to report it, you'd get a recording stating, " that due to budget cuts" we only work the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of each month.

Here's my thought-
You should spend less time worrying about Laticia and more time trying to find a job where you get paid for your time. I hope your regular, annual salary is a boatload (I don't know what ER personnel make) to make up for having to be called in for unpaid 'on call' work. If not, I would find a new career.

I'm sure Leticia is delighted with the level of care and comfort she is getting in your fine hospital. In fact, I'll be she's calling all her sisters and female cousins south of the border and telling them all about it. You know, those sisters and cousins of child-bearing age. Maybe its all so good they will blow by Los Angeles and head straight up to your part of the State.
Mike: Moses is an OB-GYN, and to get privileges at the hospital, most doctors have to do some free time, and are stuck with whomever happens to get carried in the door.

What a great opportunity to write a screenplay with a twist on the classic body/mind "trading places" theme: well-off, pirate-lookalike obstetrician vs. young, poor illegal alien. Disney would produce, Hugh would do the safety for all of the stunts. Keep her info and write it together; you'll make millions.
Seriously, I feel for you Mark, but it seems as though your ire is more directed at her than at the system? It's the system that allows/encourages this behavior, and to be frank, Democrats that set this system up. She's just taking advantage of the system in the same way rich guys park money tax free in the Cayman Islands. It's just personal for you. Probably no positive spin on this other than you brought another life into this world with the highest standards. You've got that going for you I guess.

Freaky Friday again? Our insurance company won't underwrite Lindsay Lohan again. Maybe we could get Eva Longoria to do it?

And she owns a car, but always calls 911 when she needs a ride to the hospital because it's "free" and her hubby can use the car while she visits the hospital. I admitted her to the hospital at 10 AM. It's moving very slowly. I don't expect her to deliver till sometime tomorrow. I won't be going home tonight. Yeah, I'm pissed.

(edit - decided I don't care enough about things like immigration, health care, or insurance business to try and converse about any of it)
Just think moses... you could have been an engineer instead of an OBGYN, make 1/3rd your salary, and still work 75 hour weeks. Plus sides: No staring up vaginas for pay. Down sides: No staring up vaginas for pay.
