Rust Removal
I have a small tile cleaning job tomorrow.
Heavy rust stains on some slate tile with a high level of quartz content. I was thinking of an aggressive acid wash. Anyone have a secret brew? I'll post pictures of the before and after tomorrow night. KT |
A product called" Awesome" has worked well for me on rust stains...also..CLR.
|
We use CLR and a power washer (for exterior stains).
|
Thanks for the power washer tip.
I have one. client wanted me to tear out the stained tile and replace it. I told them I thought I could give cleaning it a shot first. KT |
The same stuff we use on cars would be worth a try, phosphoric acid.
|
Diluted muriatic acid has wirked for me. Be careful!!!
|
Worked not "wirked" ... I hate this Iphone
|
Is the iron on top or impregnated in the slate? If impregnated in the slate, is this something that would have to be done every so often?
If on top, what caused it? |
Here's the results:

I used a stiff bristle deck brush and rinsed thoroughly. Took about 30 minutes, including dry time. I had muriatic in the truck as "back-up" but never needed it. KT |
You just made one happy customer. I guess you will seal it.
How are you at marble? ;):D |
There is a drain tube the exits the house above the patio from an A/C unit or something.
The rust came from that and is all down the side of the house, too. KT |
I was thinking about trying some muriatic acid on a spare piece of white marble I have to experiment with surface etching...
KT |
^^^^ I bet that foams up big time.

be careful with the muriatic acid. all it takes is a little splash to customize your cornea.
