(Real) Malware threat and screening

Okay, this DNS switching malware is only affecting about 1/2 million computers, but will be a real mess when the protections against it are dropped on July 9

It's super easy to check to see if you have the infection.

Visit www.dns-ok.us; if you see a green background to the image on that page and the words "DNS Resolution = GREEN," you're safe.

Here's the full story:

The Virus That Really Will Kill Your PC July 9 : Discovery News

Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at www.dns-ok.us;.

Check the address for typing errors such as
ww.example.com instead of
IANA — Example domains
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Much ado about "nothing" if ya ask me...much like the way Y2K was hyped. BFD...1/2 million PCs pointing to a compromised "DNS server". I can easily think of several ways ISPs (et al) could make this a total "non-issue" for end-users (even if they have been infected). But, it's more newsworthy to report that THE SKY IS FALLING :)!!!

azasadny 04-27-2012 10:16 AM

Think of all those peoPle who won't be able to update their Facebook status..... Just tragic!

Maybe so, but since it's ridiculously easy to fix... why not deal with it?

I seriously doubt it will even be noticed on July 9th. Sort of like the W2K "sky is falloing" fiasco :(.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it". A telephone area code "change" is WAY more disruptive than this "non-event". Most astute users will realize this is all hype, and the others will just have to live without their sleep and Facebook :).

"The Virus that REALLY will kill you PC July 9 - Discovery News"

Gimme a break...that's pure hype and nonsense imo.

speaking of 'puters, my desk top started crashing big time a few days ago.
Yep, blue screen-O-death and everything.

It wuz the video card going into the light.

Slapped in an old card (128 megs o'vram, woo hoo!) and it's all good.

I just ordered a new card with 512 megs, that's as good as I can get cause the MB only takes AGP.
Yep, the 'puter is that old.

Cost me darn near $40 with shipping but sometimes ya just gotta say what the heck.

I must have an obsolete keyboard...can't find that last key on mine. I've never been partial to the semi-colon anyways. I'm a punctuation "purist" and since we don't have semi-periods and semi-questions, that's where I draw the line :)

azasadny 04-27-2012 12:04 PM

Good way to scare folks into buying A/V software. The hype sells software and nobody ever remembers all of the "sky is falling" predictions of doom and gloom...

Or 112112, take your pick.

OK, I'm green and I sent my IP to the FBI as they intended.

intakexhaust 07-09-2012 07:00 AM

error 404

How ironic, look what our gov. slipped pass the desk on Friday.

I think its time for everyone to install webcams in our home toilets for our government spynetwork to get a load of cr@p back.

So, what happened? Lots of hoopla and no follow-up by the media... Typical...
