For The Same Money (+/-) $45K-$50K..Testarossa or 930? Which Would You Choose?

With a few folks liquidating toys / assest I have seen Testarossas in the same price range of 930s..

Which one would you choose, the Red Head or the Widow Maker?

For 45-50k I'd get a nice 356 ...

Porsche-O-Phile 04-30-2012 04:12 AM

Do you want a car to actually drive or to look at, polish occasionally and have bragging rights about?

Remember as with most things in life it's not the up-front cost that'll get you, it's the recurring/upkeep/maintenance. On those grounds a 930 and an F-car aren't even in the same league - the Testarossa will cost FAR more.

The 930.

930.

With a few mods the 930 is the faster car and can actually be driven instead of only gazed at.

And if gazing is your motivation the Testarossas styling is dated.

The 930 is timeless.

On this board the answer is going to be obvious. If you want a car that you can drive, the 930. If you want a garage queen - show car the Ferrari. I would get the 930 for either but I am a bit prejudiced.

sc_rufctr 04-30-2012 04:30 AM

The Testarrosa for me.

Why >>>> How long will gas be cheap enough for such an extravagance?
The 930 is a great car and in many ways it's way more practical. But this decision has nothing to do with logic or being sensible.

Go with your heart.

The future of the Testarosa's is ever increasing prices as a collectable car. They used to be in the 50-60K range, but now they are inching up to the 100's and more. I'd have to go the Ferrari just because Im crazy about V-12 motors.

wdfifteen 04-30-2012 04:41 AM

Can't I have both? I don't know if I can make such a decision. The Porsche would be fun to drive, relatively easy to keep running, and be practical to drive. The Ferrari would be a great toy.

widebody911 04-30-2012 04:47 AM

930.

The Ferrari would be great for bragging rights, but that's about it.

Christien 04-30-2012 04:53 AM

I'd get the testarossa. I've always loved that car since I was a kid. I don't think the styling looks dated at all. And I'd drive it pretty regularly.

kanadary 04-30-2012 04:58 AM

the red head but i've never owned a 930 either.

Ramathorn 04-30-2012 05:01 AM

930. but since im looking for a new rig basically in the same price range right now im actually looking at a ford raptor's for daily.

javadog 04-30-2012 05:25 AM

I've had both cars. Totally different...

Where will you keep it? How do you intend to use it? Got another Porsche to drive, or would this be your only one?

I drove my 930 daily for 4-5 years, they are very reliable and comfortable to drive. Mileage for daily use was not a concern.

Unless you want to give the previous owner a $40000 tip during the sale Testarossas are not six figure cars. Some models approach that number but it is very easy to buy a low mileage model for 50k.

They also aren't V-12s.

redstrosekNic 04-30-2012 06:07 AM

930 all day long.

kaisen 04-30-2012 06:17 AM

No, they're boxer 12s....hence the "Berlinetta Boxer" designation of the model that preceded the TR

The Testarossa looks dated? It's a very unique design, and iconic. That's all it will take to solidify the TR's collectability. That, and it's a twelve cylinder Ferrari.

Appreciation potential favors the Ferrari. At $40-50K, it's one of the most affordable Ferrari twelves. I remember when you could buy V12 330GTCs for $15-20K, and now they're ten times that.

I have to think because there are no original cars left. They are one of the last Borrani wheel cars and most have probably had a 100K work done to them by now. My guess. The Series 2 330 is one of my favorite cars.

AFA the choice, I've never driven either, but I guess I know a little about how the 930 drives by association. I'd have to drive the TR before making the decision.

But if the budget is 40-50K, I'd have to look around as well.
