Traffic stop, cops turns out to be an idiot.

I got stopped by a sheriff yesterday and the traffic stop didn't go well.

He asked me if I knew why I was being stopped. I looked at him, nodded no and handed him my insurance and registration information. Then he looked at me and screamed, DO YOU KNOW WHY YOU'RE BEING STOPPED? I looked at him and said "officer, do what you need to do, thank you".

He then asked me to get out of the car, on asked on what grounds? He screamed some crap and walked back to his car. I was fuming but did not let him know it, basically 6 miles over the speed limit was my offense.

He then comes back and tells me that he could arrest me if he wanted to, I didn't say anything, just stared at him. He then doesn't give me a ticket and tells me to slow down.

****ING CLOWN! I hate cops. WTF? What was the purpose of the stop? 6 miles over and he gets abusive and then doesn't even give me a ticket. He seemed to be looking for a fight, an arrest. I don't' know, it did not feel right.

I called my lawyer because I wanted to escalate it up but he said that there was so much corruption in that department that it would just be an expensive exercise in futility.

I really hate cops. Social welfare for *******s that couldn't get a job at burger king.

Mighta had something to do with the winning personality you have so often demonstrated on this forum....

He was pissed that you did not give him what he wanted in order to write a slam dunk citation.

Got back to his car, realized his dash cam was rolling and his attitude was over the line.

Maybe came to the conclusion that you knew your rights and may be the kind of guy who won't just quietly send in a check so he gave you a warning so he did not have to answer for it.

He wanted you to incriminate yourself by admitting to speeding and you didn't so that pissed him off. His attitude isn't surprising based on his poor career choice.

I don't hate LEO's but there are some that are real Dbags, this must have been the case.

I had a similar experience when I didn't answer the ubiquitous question, "Do you know.....?" In this case it was "... how fast?" I really didn't know because I was accelerating and then braking. I did not know what my max speed was as I was paying attention to other factors.

Then this tool yelled at me that I couldn't help but knowing with the huge speedometer dead center in front of me as he pointed at the tach.

I did not get a ticket.

"Do you know why I pulled you over?"

"Because you saw me before I saw you?"

Hugo930 05-08-2012 07:37 AM

Food for thought.

Love that.

I'd use it but I'm afraid that combining it with my unsettling appearance would get me tazzed.

Hugo930 05-08-2012 07:41 AM

I was "pretty straight" with the cop. I don't think that I had an attitude. I figure that I was making life easy by giving him the paperwork that he required and that arguing on the side of the road was a waste of time for all involved. I nodded my head no as I was handing him the paperwork, not in a dismissive manner.

The cop was looking for an arrest, it wasn't about a speeding ticket. It was surreal, he became belligerent from the second that I didn't answer his question about "why I was being stopped".

This is very funny.

I need to get a radar detector in my car.

My grandmother go off with a similar reply once. Cop asked her why she was going so fast. She replied, "Because I didn't see you behind me." No ticket.

Dry and wry.

You win.

Hugo930 05-08-2012 08:24 AM

by jerking the head to the right shoulder and making a slight cluck or it may appear that I am Bulgarian.

The Straight Dope: Why do we nod our heads for "yes" and shake them for "no"?

The phrase "I was moving with traffic" seems to have had a mysterious positive effect on meathead cops every time I have used it.

And the answer to the self incriminating question is ALWAYS "no". ALWAYS. No exceptions. Even say it with conviction. "No sir".

Actually the answer is to not give an answer at all.

There is a reason they ask that question, there is no answer that you can give that does not work in their favor.

So when you say no he can now write you for anything he wants and you can't call him on it because you admitted that you were not paying attention and were not aware that you did X.

My mother was still driving in her late 70's. On one occasion my sister was riding with her when she got pulled over. Sis related the story...

Cop: "License and insurance info. please."
Mom hands paperwork over and asks why she was stopped.
Cop: "You ran a red light at that last intersection."
Mom: "No it was yellow ...and I was too close to stop."
Cop: "What kind of car is this?"
Mom ( looking up at him with contempt) "You mean to tell me they let you be a policeman and you can't even tell one type of car from another?"

(*she got the ticket)
